Factory Peugoet team to enter ETCC?!?!

According to this weeks "Motorsport news" newspaper Peugoet representitives were at Magny Cours during the weekend to discuss the chance of entering the series. The marque could enter the last 2 races at Estoril and Monza, with Jan Magnussen and Jason Watt, who currently drive for the Peugoet sport team in the domestic Danish series. The plan is to get dipensation to enter the 3 door 307 model this year and then homlogate a 5 door car next year.

ENDS:/

If this happens this is sureley great news for the ETCC! That will mean 4 factory squads, and 1 works supported team (Skoda). Ah the ETCC days are lookig good.[I]

That would be great news. At the moment Peugeot is only involved in rally. Peugeot is very succesfull with their 206 and 307 cars.

Let's hope the good times are back for 4 door sedan racing in Europe!

What would the point be of entering a 3-door car now when they will have to enter a 5-door later? Why don't they just enter the 5-door right away and develop it???

There could be many reasons:

1) Perhaps, it's b/c the 5 door car isn't even built yet and they want to do some more aero development on the car.
2) The budget still has yet to be finalized/okay-ed.
3) By racing the 3 door for now, they can gain some experience and data on the racetracks/engine.

The impression I got from this brief story in MN was that the Peugeot 307's currently raced in Denmark would be the cars used if entered into the ETCC. So it's a toe in water campaign if you like.

Jason Watt back in international racing! Something we can all celebrate! He could kick ass in the ETCC, I would humbly suggest.

Yeah but only for 2 rounds, Im suprised that the FIA is allowing a 3 door car into the championship at all though. I get the feeling that once in the series they will come back for more in 2004. Only with the 407 not the 307. Lets hope so.

Well, I think the FIA is hoping that Peugeot will return the year in a 4 door. They are making that assumption? Or is the ETCC going so bad that they will now allow 2 door hatchbacks to race in order to hopefully attract more manufacturers? I sure hope it ain't the last reason!

I dont think it is in a bad state. Okay a couple of small privateer teams have left. But we have the prospect of the new Skoda's entering later in the year, and the factory Peugoets..

Didn't they give dispensation for the 3-door civic already, so it's not the first time it's happened. The FIA have already proven with all their rule changes that they are prepared to bend over backwards and agree to anything to get manufacturers in. Look how they have messed with the rules so far. They are like that bloke from the "Fast Show" who just agrees with everything that is said. In one ear they have BMW and in the other Alfa. They don't know what to answer.

What is a 407? The haven't built one yet have they? I thought that the replacement for the 406 wasn't due until late 2004. If that is the case, as with the 406 coupe / 307 in 2001, there will not be enough time to develop it before the season starts. Also manufacturers are very guarded about releasing details of new models early so they are hardly going to allow it to test on a circuit prior to it's release. Secondly they won't want a brand new car to run the risk of being beaten before it has even been launched.

A Ford Focus Touring Car also. Peugeot 307 should be the best choice of car for the French manufacturer.

Autosport today says it's unlikely they'll run in the 2 rounds at the end of the year as getting dispensation to run the 3-door could be hard.

Also, the article says that Peugeot Sport boss Corrado Provera has stated that any entry in the ETCC would be up to the Danish importer who currently funds their domestic racing.

Even so, a factory squad is a factory squad. Good news for the ETCC.

How hard would a dispensation be? The very concept of a dispensation is that they would be skipping steps/requirements? Or is the only thing they're skipping is the bodyshape and not the other engine/safety requirements? How far off could the Danish cars be?

Perhaps I'm just the pessimist, but I highly doubt the danish importer would have the funds to race in 2 series full time? Unless he cuts back his Danish campaign and concentrate more on the ETCC?

Yes it did, actually. As did Autosport magasine. It would be a works team, like the Schnitzer BMW's in the ETCC..
