Winton 1985 ATCC

Yesterday on RPM, they mentioned that Winton first hosted a round of the ATCC in 1985 and it was the only round not feature a Holden on the grid.

So where was Mr Brock and the rest of the Holden regulars of that era?

This was the first race of the Group A era and Brock did not have his car ready for the event.

Brock's car was not ready in so much as the car was still in transit from competing in New Zealand at the Wellington 500 earlier in the year. Neville Crichton's own JPS BMW also wasn't back in time, so he took over the ex-Group C JPS BMW for the Winton event.

Jim Keogh had his ex-Group C Commodore going by the Sandown event that Brock returned for, and Steve Masterton had his Commodore ready for the first AMSCAR round, but it was a slow burn getting Commodore's onto the grid in the first half of the season.

Seems odd that the 'factory team' couldn't knock together a spare car over the off-season.

Both of their Group C cars, which could have been converted to Group A had been sold, Brock was increasingly coming under the influence of Dr Dowker. Larry was on the outer and Harves was managing the HDT Road Car business...who was steering the ship?

The first Commodore was ready in December but the second car wasn't ready until the Calder round in April.

They didn't really do that back in those days.

In the early to mid 1980's, many teams only fielded one car for the lead driver in the ATCC; and then sometimes two cars for the endurance championship.

For interest the finishing order for the 1985 Winton ATCC race was:

1 Jim Richards BMW 635 CSi
2 Neville Crichton BMW 635 CSi
3 Kevin Bartlett Mitsubishi Starion
4 Alan Jones Alfa GTV6
5 Brian Sampson Mitsubishi Starion
6 Laurie Nelson Ford Mustang
7 John Smith Toyota Sprinter
8 Bob Holden Toyota Levin
9 Laurie Hazelton Ford Capri
10 Mike Minnear Volvo 360 GLT
DNF
Dick Johnson Ford Mustang
Colin Bond Alfa GTV6
Don Smith Ford Mustang
Gary Wilmington Jaguar XJS
Greville Arnel Mitsubishi Starion

An interesting range of cars, I'm sure you will agree.....
