Qualifying:

Ed Carpenter denied Penske, what might have been their first front row shut out since 1988 when Rick Mears, Danny Sullivan and Al Unser took the first three places on the grid, by claiming Pole for the third time.

The Fast 9 was dominated by Chevrolet; good to see Danica in 7th. Top Honda was Bourdais with a creditable 5th place, considering his devastating accident at Indy last year, with Dixon 9th. Unusually, leading Honda team Andretti Autosport appear to have had trouble finding form, with Marco Andretti 12th and 100th 500 winner Alexander Rossi last but one.

That would've been something but how about that trio at Penske in 89!

It isn't?

If a team buys out another ride - that is a business deal outside of what happens during qualifying. The fastest 33 are those who qualify on pole day.

What you are proposing is promoting slower cars into the field because they are full timers - that is very different.

I can't see Shank giving up his entry - so that only really leaves Jay Howard

That should have read 1988, not 1989. Mears, Sullivan and Unser not only took the first three spots on the grid but all were previous winners of the 500.

1989 was also exceptional, with three Penske cars on the front row but Emmo's Penske PC-18, was entered by Patrick Racing; Emmo went on to win the first of his two 500 victories.

Those were the days, great spectacle. Three great American racers on the front row. How good was 89? Emmo certainly shock things up when he went over to America.

Racing isn't fair. The #5 messed up and they missed out. It was the same rules for everyone.

Rahal sucked it up when he missed out, so did Penske. Contriving the rules to guarentee people a start in the race just cheapens the Indianapolis 500 as a whole.

Everyone has been howling for years about how bad it is that the 500 could only attract 33 entries, how poor the quality of the field was because to get to 33 they relied on talent-less ride-buyers, how great it would be to have more than 33 cars again.

I doubt Hinchcliffe not racing will have that much effect on the viewing numbers either.

His first CART season was in '84 but it was in '89 when he won both Indy and the Driver's Championship. He won Indy again in '93 getting the jump on Mansell on the restart and was runner up in the Driver's Championship in '93 and '94. He won 22 races, iirc.

He made the switch to Indycars after a failed attempt to return to F1. Certainly he seemed to find that old spark that had been missing in his final years of F1. But he beat an all star race in 93 and could have added more. Made everyone remember what a great driver he always was

I always thought he retired from driving in F1 in 1980 but moved into the management of his brother Wilson's team, Fittipaldi Automotive, until it went bust in 1982. He then moved to CART in 1984 after a taking two years off from racing.

I vaguely recall, possibly incorrectly, that he either tested or was at least heavily linked with the Spirit(?) team for the 1984 F1 season, but the team folded before the season started.

From there he went to America.

Yes, he did try and race with the little known Spirti team in 84 and in the end they went with Mauro Baldi. So Emmo decided for himself to move to America

I didn't know Emmo was involved with the Spirit team. It must have been very brief, as I saw the Spirit-Honda make its debut, at the 1983 Race of Champions and saw it again later that year at the European Grand Prix; both races were at Brands Hatch. On each occasion it was driven by Stefan Johansson. I saw it for the last time at the 1984 British GP at Brands but with the Hart engine and driven by Huub Rothengatter

He was only a possible driver. But it must have been interesting seeing Spirit turn up at the 83 ROC, especially with the Honda lump. Certainly they achieved something that many people could only dreamed of. Must have been something to see them race

It retired after a few laps at the ROC but faired better at the European GP, finishing the race but well down the order. Not the most ominous beginning, for an engine manufacturer who would go onto become a major force in F1 and CART/IndyCar.

Well a lot of manufacturers have had a bad start, but it wasn’t going anywhere with Spirit. Still it was amazing how well they did in both F1 and Indycars

It was Bobby Rahal, as team owner-driver of Rahal-Hogan Racing, who got Honda involved in CART in 1994.

They had one decent result and Honda switched to a number of teams in 1995, the most notable being Ganassi, who won the Driver's Championship four times in row, with Jimmy Vasser in '96, Alex Zanardi in '97 and '98 and Montoya in '99. Honda had further success in 2000 and 2001 with Gil de Ferran winning the Drivers Championship, though Honda didn't win the Manufacturer's Cup in 2000, Ford-Cosworth did.

James Hinchcliffe says Schmidt Peterson Motorsports is no longer pursuing any method of getting him onto the Indianapolis 500 starting grid.

I personally think that's the right thing to do.

And apparently ARROWS is fine with the situation and has made statements supporting the 'that's racing' attitude.

I'm hoping ARROWS has sponsor commitment stuff with him early and we get him in the ABC booth to make their last 500 worthy of watching. I know NBC would already be calling him and have a contact ready to go.

Sometimes even the best fail to qualify. We usually expect them to qualify with no trouble. I’m sure even the sponsors understand. Who knows what Hinch will do on raceday? Maybe he will be in the box

I was thinking about the broadcast opportunity for the Mayor as soon as I heard of him failing to qualify. Then I put myself in his shoes and I said there'd be no f****** way I'm calling this race! I should be in it!
