Gerben24 has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
WSBK Round 14: Portimao

Johnny Rea will make his World Superbike debut for Ten Kate Honda in Portugal, taking Sofuoglu's bike. Sofuoglu will do the supersports race on Johnny's bike (I wonder if he'll carry the #1 plate).

Interesting call for Ten Kate to make their 2009 switches a race early. Is Kiyo fit again or will it be Checa/Rea/Bauer? What about Leon Haslam, is he doing the one-off which was suggested a while back?

The battle for second place is the biggest lure to the weekend; I think it'll be Haga but it should be a good battle. How does the new Portimao circuit look?

The Portimao track looks really GOOD! Lots of undulation, braking for the first corner will be interesting and that last corner looks fast.

Kiyo will be back on the bike and it was confirmed HM Plant Honda would also compete with the big boys. However, it's been a bit quiet around them, so I don't know what's happening there...

Is Martin Bauer a chance to ride the Ten Kate Honda in Portugal - good reward for winning the German title this year if that is the case...

Listening to Daryl Beatie commentating on the MotoGP on Sunday he said he had received a text message from Troy Bayliss about the Portimao track. It simply said - "Best track I have ever ridden. Like riding on a roller coaster."

Sounds good.

I don't know how good the racing will be. Reading the test reports from HM Plant and Xerox Ducati, there is hardly any grip (not suprising for a new track). So, after a few sessions you'll get a racing line with grip, but the overtaking spots will still be slippery...

Fingers crossed I'm wrong!

Don't jinx it already!

It was wet today, so not sure we learned much. I love how many of the riders are having a subtle dig at the teams that tested prior. And props to Josh Hayes for putting it 2nd in provisional supersport qualy.

Yep, a very good decision for Honda to make this switch now. Cruthclow and Haslam olso in the first 2 lines on the gird. Couldn't get better than this. It should be an amazing race...
Hope to see Rea on the podium

Race 1: Great racing on a great track (spoiled a bit by the teams that tested there and have so much more dry track time).

Lavilla's 'save' coming out of the last corner...

What is the average age of the men on the podium? 45?

two very good races on a very nice new track
too bad Bayliss wasn't in a mood to "play" and just cruised to wins
Laconi race was good in race 2 .. battling with Suzukis and Hondas .. hope he gets a good/better ride for 2009

What a fantatsic track. Exhilirating to watch, and conducive to good racing too.

But..

...was it my TV or did the main straight seem incredibly glary ? From certain camera angles all I could see was silhouettes of the riders and bikes. Maybe it needs a bit more rubber down to get rid of the sheen.

The battles behind Bayliss were awesome. Looking forward to more races at this track. Will Moto GP be going there?

How about some props for Josh Hayes? He's been to three tracks he has no experience on and has done himself proud. I may be wrong, but I believe he has beaten his teammates eachtime. I hope he gets a good ride next year.

I think Hayes has tested here before the meeting, whereas most of his rivals didn't - an exact reversal of the first two races he did. Still, it suggests that he can be a solid top-10 runner in a full season with good practice sessions and data.

Fantastic racing in the Superbikes, and from what little I saw of the Supersports. Apart from Bayliss streaking away at the front, there were at least half a dozen serious contenders in both races. Nice for Fabrizio to finish on a high after his mistake at the start of race 1; Biaggi was almost justified in his furious reaction.

The meeting was good for British racing pride too - Rea was better than Sofuoglu has been all year, and the HM Plant boys really fought with the other frontrunners. HM Plant benefitted from a pre-race test there however. Does anyone know for sure if their bikes had WSBK-spec engines, and what the differences are from normal BSB rules?

TGF tested Corser's R1 and Bayliss's 1098R. Supposedly he ran around a 1:50 on the Yamaha, but was about two seconds slower on the Duc.

Ben Spies ran a few laps on Haga's bike at the end of yesterday and then ran a few on the new R1. No times were released. We should be getting a testing recap soon from today. The new Aprilia is also at the track. Not sure about the Beemer.

Just saw this, Josh Hayes will not race in Europe.

http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2008/Nov/081104c.htm

Funny that Sofuoglu was not pleased with Hayes. I haven't seen the supersport race yet, so I'll reserve judgement.
