That is indeed a great picture. One of these days I'll make the trip to Monza...

Anyway back to the topic. It is great that the old banking can be made out too. Last edited by Adam43; 22 Sep 2003 at 20:29. |

Monza really is a great place. Have not been for a while but so many interesting vantage points out in the woods. On the photo you can also make out the club circuit link that turns right off the main straight (just before the old banking) to rejoin at the exit of Ascari. Just like Imola, Monza is built right on the edge of the town.

Theres a certain feeling there, something you cant put your finger on... ghosts! I wish I lived in that suburb of Milan.

I reckon it was April 1969 for the 1000km sportscar race. However, chicanes were installed at the entry to each banked curve. Redman and Siffert won in their Porsche 908.

I should add that it incorporated the road course too to create a lap of over 10km. The last time the 4.5km oval was used on its own for racing was in the late 50s, however it was used for track tests etc for many years afterwards.

I love the picture too, its fantastic! When you see it on tv it doesn't take the cars long to whip round there, on the pic it looks like it'd take forever! Love to go there some day... better than Silverstone.... well for the weather and parking anyway...

I went years ago for a holiday, the year Herbet won it (95 or 96?) Excellent, camped in the circuit just down from the Helicopter Pad (empty field now, so doubt that happens) for about £25 and a three day ticket for £110. Excellent.
You had to be up by about 4am to get near the track on raceday. Excellent experience, easily the best atmosphere ever at a track. Highly recommended. |

When we arrived on the Thursday night it was chucking it down so we had to put the tent up in the dark and rain. Went to sleep and got woken up by the F1 engines vooming past really loud. We both woke up, though **** were missing practice. Arrrggggh, went to get out the sleeping bags etc,,,,then realised it was still dark. A group of Germans had brought a truck, turned it into a music stage and started playing those F1 sounds CD's through the amps at 3am!
Also had lawn mower racing....with a difference. Look the accelerator open so it would go on its won and with a pick axe, try and aim for the the fuel pipe to cut the supply as it sped around this empty (thankfully) part of the camp site. Good entertainment, but we kept well away from that! |
