That's an interesting story, always good to know where these manufacturer cars started out and how they went on to become a success.

Do race teams use production window glass? I assumed it was some kind of plastic for "lightness".

The windscreen has to be replaced with a polycarbonate 6mm screen.
Driver and front passenger windows must be original glass, with safety film applied.

The remaining side windows can optionally be replaced with 4mm polycarbonate. The rear window can optionally be replaced with 6mm polycarbonate.

Definitely the CC had polycarbonate rears when BMR ran them, I would imagine most teams do this. Cheap, lose a bit of weight and less likely to break in an accident than glass.

That rule has changed and all glass can now be polycarbonate

TCT Trophy cars can save a bit more weight - they are permitted to run with 4mm rear windows.......

Just melt some coke bottles, roll out with a rolling pin, trim the edge with scissors (ask a responsible adult) and it'll be reet.

The logistics of getting the bits together, crating up and transporting will be broadly similar to stripping a car built and shipped through the usual channels - unless the manufacturer is doing the team a favour. Barty no doubt did get a favour and had his man with a wagon and loader get his shells straight from the assembly line, which is a damn sight closer to Motorbase Towers than our Spanish friends are to big Tony's.

When they built the CCs originally TG flogged interior and oily bits on his personal ebay account. Further digging at the time revealed the first car built was actually an ex-taxi.

Guys in my team needed a partially built car from one of our own plants - you would not believe how difficult it was!! Having a shell with doors on is easy enough as that is how it comes out the bodyshop. When you need some bits from the Trim&Final hall it all falls apart as you can't only put a few bits onto a car on the line.

Not sure if it contributes anything to the discussion, but when I bought a SEAT Leon in 2004 it was built in Belgium, not Spain. Considerably closer than either of those factories.

In other news... genuinely, who cares where the new HARD car came from? Do we analyse the build source of every other car in such fine detail?

Some people are just pretty good at picking apart a pretty decent bit of news and trying to find any negative angle they can... but would still also be complaining if the CCs were kept on for another year 😂

On a serious note - the Subarus were/are owned by a leasing firm.
Is this an option that any other teams have ever taken up?

Not BTCC, but when Carlin went bust it turned out that all the cars were leased. Lease companies became very averse for a while.

Dont confuse a typical leasing company that Joe public would use with "motorsport leasing".

In motorsport it is in essence a loan secured against the car. The team can pay the loan of at any time. Joe public typically can't.

According to Companies House, the charges on the Subarus have all been removed, meaning the finance has been paid off. Incidentally, I'm aware that one of the cars has been sold, and not for use in BTCC.

Several bits of the HARD fleet are on finance - VW Cup Golfs, NGTC Toyotas, Ginetta GT4s, transporter, hospitality unit, etc. But that's not that uncommon.
