2012 Scottish Classic Sports and Saloons

2012 promises to be another exciting year for Scottish Classic Sports and Saloon competitors and spectators.
The Knockhill-based championship will have an increased number of races and three visits to circuits in England and
Northern Ireland. Provisional dates are listed below.

Regulations will be largely similar to 2011, with eligible cars being road-legal and produced between 1949 and 1979.
Five classes are offered, split by capacity: A – up to1500cc, B 1501 – 1800cc, C 1801 – 2300cc, D 2301 – 3600cc, E over 3600cc. There is also an invitation class.

‘Away’ Rounds:

Oulton Park 2nd June
Croft 24th June (support to BTCC)
Kirkistown 30th June


Knockhill dates:

April 8th
May 5th/6th
July 21st/22nd
August 12th
August 26th (support to BTCC)
September 9th
October 7th

Here we go!

Looking forward to my first season (assuming the car is finished in time) especially with the extra BTCC round.

The car carries its original Datapost livery for the benefit of fans so I don't have many visible opportunities for sponsors but would be happy to discuss options such as naming the team to reflect support particularly in relation to the BTCC rounds (ITV2 coverage)

The car has already appearedd in the Corgi collectors mag as they issued a Vanguard model of it just before Christmas and Classic Ford want to do a feature. On track it should attract a lot of attention.....

Hi do you know when the new regs are published. I was going to run in the classics but my car had a few period modifications which did not seem to tie up with the regs and where deemed to extreme basically a gruppe 2 body kit), then at the meets I have seen cars which are more like works cars with large arch extensions (BDA escort) or never sold to the public TR7 sprint.

2012 regs should be on SMRC website soon. Changes I'm aware of relate to cc classes, safety (side bars on open cars) and Mk1 escort gearbox.

Best to discuss any mods with Rob McKinna before they're done. Period body kits are normally ok but you cant change track and wheel width is restricted by class

The Scottish Classic regs are a law unto themselves! If you have enough dosh and influence then you can run anything, even BDG engined Escorts and 911s to near current spec!

If being ‘a law unto themselves’ means a continually increasing number of competitors
over several years, long may it continue.

There is some big-budget machinery – however, many of the cars could be built for less than £10K.

Well said Malcolm. #61 will be in the 4 figure club with a lot of graft and scouring ebay!
Whilst it can be a bit frustrating that big cheque books can deliver big wins I guess if you put plenty in you deserve to get plenty out. The series doesn't pretend to be showroom class and those that can will push the regs are far as they can - just as happened when the cars raced originally.

The majority are in it for the fun and the chance to do well in class. Regardless of budget the camaraderie is priceless.

Looking forward to the new season - and for those that dont our classics then do hscc or mod saloons.

I think you will be surprised at how many Scottish and northern historic racers reluctantly head south due to lax regs at KH.

The season commences on 8th April - hopefully the weather will improve from the artic chill we're currently experiencing !


There have been a few amendments to the calendar - details below:

Twenty-five cars attended the first event of the 2012 championship at Knockhill. Spectators were treated to close racing in both rounds
with several new cars in action. The day was marred by Caroline McMurdo’s qualifying crash. Thankfully, she was unhurt. Her car was wrecked.

Regular 2011 race winner, Andrew Smith (Morgan +8), continued his fine form by winning race one from Stan Bernard and Raymond Boyd,
(both in Porsche 911). The top six was completed by Willie Robertson (Datsun 240), Robert Marshall (Ford Escort) and Alex Montgomery
who excelled in his recently acquired MGB. Race two saw Smith win again, followed by Bernard. Marshall had the fastest lap and finished third,
ahead of Boyd, Robertson and Montgomery.

Nic Boyes (Mini Cooper) won Class A on both occasions, as did Donald Laird (Lotus Elan) in Class B. Messrs. Marshall, Bernard and Smith took
the top spot in Classes C,D and E respectively.

10/10ths contributor Datapost61 had his maiden outing in the replica of the 1980 British Saloon Car Championship ‘Datapost’ Ford Fiesta 1300 -
watched by the driver of the original car – Alan Curnow. Sadly, engine difficulties restricted the car to only a few laps.

SMRC Classics 8/4/12

Great pics as ever Malcolm and well done for getting one of the Fiesta on track - it seemed a rare event! Maybe next time.

Also some nice pics of the A30, shame it got wrecked - some interesting video footage on youtube by 'theredhotporsche'.

I dont normally comment on these type of things but having just watched the piece of film from thredhotporsche, what in the name of God was the TR7 driver doing? Perhaps the A30 had wandered a little but he had already made an a**e of the previous corner so his lap was finished. He should have given her room. Disgraceful driving and quite possibly someone out of racing as a result.

I would have thought the A30 was on the correct line and the TR7 was on the wrong line regardless of the attempted pass. The TR7 on that line would go wide through the dip and end up well off line for the entry to the next corner over the brow and add even more time to an already partially ruined practice lap.

Rounds three and four of the Championship are at Knockhill on 6th May.

A warning has been issued regarding driving standards - hopefully, there
will be no repeat of the incidents at last month's event.

Will be up on Sunday but sadly in mufties not a racesuit, hoping to have the Fiesta engine back together for Oulton or more likely Croft.

If all goes well, Rodger Motherwell (2011 Class A champ) should have his orange Sprint #68 out. Its had a lot of work over the winter including a full Trofeo kit so should look stunning and (barring teething troubles) go like the clappers!

Lots of changes at the top of SMRC so chat in the paddock should be interesting.

Scottish classic competitors were spared the rain and snow which prevailed during other races
at Knockhill on 6th May. Eight of the twenty-six drivers were having their first outing of the year,
including newcomer Bruce Weir. The trend which developed in 2011, of many drivers choosing selected
events rather than the complete calendar, seems to be continuing this year.

Anyone studying the results would see a very close finish to both races, with the top three cars
between one and two seconds apart and those in fourth to sixth places very close behind.
This conceals the effortless manner in which Andrew Smith (Morgan +8) won both races.
His nearest rivals, however, had intense battles to maintain their positions.
Further down the order, many cars were closely matched, especially those
in the smallest capacity class.

Class Winners (both races unless stated) :
A Nic Boyes (Mini Cooper)
B Donald Laird (Lotus Elan)
C Robert Marshall (Ford Escort)
D Raymond Boyd (Porsche 911), Stan Bernard (Porsche 911)
E Andrew Smith (Morgan +8)

The next two rounds are at Oulton Park on Saturday 2nd June.

Though I can't vouch for what the chassis started life as Willie (along with the other members of 'The TR8 Squadron') runs a stonking V8 of 3.9L.

Last time I saw the "TR8"s none of them were genuine factory cars but ones built up for the racing at KH using old TR7s and Rover V8s. Not the tidiest of cars, I seem to remember the first one to appear was an ex rallycross car with it's carbs sticking through the bonnet.

I think most people on here would realise that! My personal preference is to call such hybrids 'TR7V8', but you could say 'what's in a name?'.......
