Race report - 2nd meeting, 4th May
At Malcolm's request...
An unusual start as thick fog descended on Knockhill in the morning, visibility was so poor that "qualifying" consisted of 3 laps behind the safety car. Grid positions were determined by championship positions from Round 1 in April. With John Marshall on holiday Ray Boyd (class D 911) and Harry Simpson (class G Ginetta) took the front row. The unusual circumstances saw me on row 3 with some very fast cars behind including former champion Stan Bernard whose class D 911 had missed round 1. I can't comment much on the race goings on as I was locked in battle with Grant Allan's 911 (Youtube 'steve#61' https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9y...9KdWzHA/videos) After George Leitch scampered off in his class A fiesta. Race 1 finishing order: 1st Ray Boyd (D) 2nd Tommy Gilmartin (E) +3.9s 3rd Stan Bernard (D) +10.4s Harry Simpson was 4th winning class G, Jimmy Crow 5th (C), Jim Grant 8th (B) and George Leitch 10th (A). Race 2 I got the better of Grant Allan's 911 off the start and tried in vain to catch George Leitch who took his second class A victory of the day. Further up the road, Gilmartin got the win this time leading Stan Bernard's 911 for most of the race until he dropped behind Ray Boyd's car at the last giving him the class win. 1st Tommy Gilmartin 2nd Ray Boyd +1.7s 3rd Stan Bernard +3.6s Harry Simpson took 4th and class G, Jimmy Crow 6th (C), Jim Grant 8th (B) and George Leitch 10th (A) Race highlights on MotorsTV Weds 28/5 at 18:23 Hopefully, Malcolm will return with his usual great pictures next week! |

A healthy twenty-two car grid appeared at Knockhill on 15th June.
Returnees Andy Smith, Morgan +8, and Shonny Paterson, TR7 V8, proved that a lengthy absence away from this championship is no barrier to success. Paterson qualified first, over two seconds faster than anyone else in damp conditions. Smith won both races and Paterson was third and second in races one and two respectively. Reigning champion, Tommy Gilmartin, Morgan +8, was second in race one and third in race two. Several class lap record times were set in race one, which had dry conditions. Smith was fastest of all at 57.6 seconds. A great performance by Tim Reid, Marcos, in race two, gave him a new class lap record of 61.5 seconds. Six cars suffered mechanical difficulties by the end of race two, however, there was still great entertainment, especially that provided by Harry Simpson, Ginetta G4, and Raymond Boyd, Porsche 911, who were only 0.2 seconds apart at the end. Similarly, our correspondent, Steve Uphill, Fiesta 1300, finishing one second ahead of Nic Boyes’ Mini. Class winners in races one and two A George Leitch Steve Uphill B Tim Reid Tim Reid C John Marshall Jimmy Crow D Raymond Boyd Raymond Boyd E Andy Smith Andy Smith Pictures to follow. Next event is at Knockhill on 13th July. |

Malcolm,
I'm not blowing the proverbial but the image of Nic's Mini over the grid in the rain is one of the best images I have seen in a long time - stunning in terms of focus, lighting and mood - you caught a cracker!, wish it was of me! |

Shonny Paterson, TR7V8, won both races at Knockhill on 13th July.
The first of these successes was particularly hard fought, as Harry Simpson , Ginetta G4 Twin Cam, was less than half a second behind as the leading car passed the chequered flag. Paterson's margin in race two was almost twelve seconds from the Porsche 911 of Raymond Boyd. Other close action of note was the battle between Tim Reid, Marcos GT and Jimmy Crow, Escort RS2000, with Reid ahead at the end of each race. Similarly, Grant Allan, Porsche 911 and Blair Nimmo, Ford Capri, were closely matched - Porsche power in the ascendancy both times. Class A competitors, Steve Uphill, Fiesta 1300, and Ian Morton, MG Midget , 1300, provided great entertainment, especially in race two where Steve crossed the line 0.4 seconds ahead of Ian. A much higher rate of attrition than normal, due to mechanical woes, sidelined several competitors in races one and two. At the end of race two only eleven of eighteen cars were running. Hopefully, this will not be repeated at the next event in August. Spectators and competitors enjoyed an excellent day's racing at Knockhill on 17th August.
Fastest in qualifying was Shonny Paterson (TR7V8) - an advantage which he converted to victory in race one. Morgan +8 driver Tommy Gilmartin was second in race one and swapped places with Paterson in race two. Raymond Boyd (Porsche 911) continued his 100% class winning record (Class D) and leads the championship from Steve Uphill and Harry Simpson. Journalist Nigel Boothman drove Alex Montgomery's MGB V8 - part of his research for a forthcoming magazine article on Scottish Classic Racing. Next event is on 14th September. Penultimate Round - Sept 14th
Malcolm could not attend as (by now) he is off to Spa with some of the guys so I'll do my best! - no pics as I was busy!
A depleted field as much of the 'big stuff' (TR8s, Morgans, Mustangs) were off to Spa and didn't want to take a risk a couple of days before... R1 After several meetings of mechanical woes Stan Bernard (class D 911) put it on pole and went on to win race 1 ahead Championship Leader Ray Boyd halting Ray's 100% class record. I won class A gaining precious points on Ray. Harry Simpson (class G Ginetta) spun into the gravel at the hairpin for a DNF after an attempt to dive down the inside of Stan at the hairpin which brought out the safety car for 3 laps. R2 Boyd took the lead from Bernard from the off but Harry Simpson in the Ginetta delivered a stunning drive from the back of the grid to the lead by the end of Lap 5 which he held to the flag with Boyd 2nd followed by Bernard. After a poor start and a bit of contact with Ian Morton's Midget at the first corner I took Class A, albeit with reduced points (16 as opposed to 25) as Ken Brearley's mini didn't make the start after a R1 DNF with a broken valve meaning the minimum full points starters number was not met. Class championships are decided but the overall title is (mathematically) still open. Ray Boyd (class D 911) leads Steve Uphill (me, Class A Fiesta 1300) by 42 points and I lead Harry Simpson (Class G Ginetta G4) by a further 42 points in 3rd. With 2 races up to 25 points each at the final round on 5th October a change is possible but I've already practised congratulating Ray through gritted teeth! Normal commentary and Malcolm's superb photos will reveal all after the October round. Steve (Datapost Fiesta 1300 #61) |

Steve, great to hear about last weekend's action.
Hope to be at Knockhill for the last meeting. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my visit to Spa - hope all competitors have a successful event. |

Raymond Boyd is the 2014 Scottish Classic Sports and Saloons champion.
He achieved class wins in thirteen of the fourteen rounds, beaten once by Stan Bernard. This was his first overall win in the championship - warmly received by competitors and spectators. Steve Uphill was second overall and saloon champion, followed by Harry Simpson in third place. Class Winners : A - Steve Uphill B - Tim Reid C - Jimmy Crow D - Raymond Boyd E - Tommy Gilmartin G - Harry Simpson These results followed the final meeting of the year, in which Boyd won race one followed by Simpson, with new class G record holder Kieron Baillie third. Simpson and Boyd swapped places in race two. Baillie was close behind in third place.
