VSCC Cadwell - 8 June 2013

Did no-one else from Ten-Tenths go to this lovely meeting? 11 races in the day including one for the Williams Trophy Race which had the largest field of Bugattis that I can ever remember seeing. Very good turnout of spectators too, one Mr Palmer flying in for a couple of hours, leaving with a nod of approval which he expressed on his return to Oulton Park, apparently! Only downside was the weather - whilst most of the country was basked in sunshine, the East coast continued to be damn cold - I could see my breath, so it was more like February than June and I admit to departing after race 9 through pending frostbite. Loads of pics though which I'll put up over the coming days. Well done VSCC!

We were there and enjoyed every minute. Comprehensive gallery is at the usual place. Well done VSCC.

I was marshalling on Startline and as usual had an excellent day.

John if you left after Race 9 you missed arguably the most exciting race of the day, Race 10 was very very good with some clean but very hard racing at the front.

That's Sod's Law, I guess, but was pretty cold and worn out from foot slog. I always walk the whole track (apart from the off limits bit!) in order to take pics from various vantage points.

Talking of startline, I think the first photo in that gallery is of my back! Probably the best view to be fair

It was definitely getting chillier towards the end of the day so I don't blame you, I think the last time I walked round the circuit was about 20 years ago.

I think you mean this race long duel for the lead.

Race 1 - Morgan Three Wheeler Club Challenge

A rather small field and big disparity in performance as split into 3 classes. All completely mad of course, particularly the passengers, but great entertainment value. Outright winner by some margin was the Hamish Bibbie/Katie Bain Morgan JAP 8/80 Racer (34):-

Race 2 - Frazer Nash/GN race.

A good sized grid and won by Jonathan Cobb (3) in the Frazer Nash Ford, although Justin Maeers who finished second 2.6 seconds behind, posted fastest lap in the GN Parker.

Race 3 - Handicap Race for pre war cars.

Well supported race with good variety. It was won by Tony Seber who somewhat defeated the handicappers attempts at a close finish by taking his MG PB across the finishing line flag 12 seconds ahead of Hugh Birley. However there was some good bunching down the field.

Race 4 - Williams Trophy Race

This was for pre 1935 2-seater Grand Prix cars, a mainly Bugatti field with the addition of a Riley, an MG and a couple of invited post 1934 cars - a Talbot Lago T150C and a Maserati 4CS. It included two Type 13 Brescia Bugattis and they really are early cars (1920/21) and whilst one retired before completion of the first lap, the other (121) gave a very good account of itself in the very capable hands of Alex Ames. Charles Knill-Jones won in Nick Masons beautiful T35B (20) whilst the similar cars of Robert Spencer (118)and Chris Hudson (12) came 2nd and 3rd although Duncan Pittaway's T35 (25)ran the latter very close. A real privilege to see all these cars together so worth two posts of pics, I feel!:-

Race 1 - Morgan Three Wheeler Club Challenge

Apologies to John for posting in the middle of his posts but thought I would add a few whilst I had the time. As John said the Morgan grid was a bit light in terms of numbers but great entertainment as usual. Here's a few from a different location:

Race 2 - Frazer Nash / GN Cars (1/2)

These cars are a favourite of mine to watch and a decent sized grid gave good value - so two batches of these from me:

Race 5 - Melville Trophy Race

This was a race for Special Pre-War Sports Cars. Although Jonathan Cobb in his Frazer Nash Ford eventually finished with a considerable lead, for the first few laps he was in a close battle with Brain White in another Frazer Nash - a BMW TT Replica before he was forced to retire. I believe this was because of a broken chain as a marshal recovered one from the Mountain and I think you can just see the chain going in the photo (car 5):

Race 6 - Geoghegan Trophy Race (1/2)

Another good sized grid with some close battles throughout, especially for the first two places with William Mahany's HRG Le Mans Model finishing just two seconds ahead of the Frazer Nash Super Sports of Charles Gillett. One of the photos shows the HRG chasing down the FN into the hairpin (excuse the tree braches!) - the lead changing one the last couple of laps.

Race 7 - Formula 3 (500) Racing Cars

As usual, a very entertaining race with John Turner winning in his Cooper Mk 9 - he seemed to have a big smile on his face every time he came past where I was at the bottom of the mountain. Although he was gradually chased down he managed to maintain his lead to the line - less than 4 seconds covered the first three.

Race 8 - Shuttleworth, Nuffield & L Thompson Memorial Trophies Race

The race with one of the longer titles but smaller grids. But it still saw some close action as can be seen in one or two of the photos.

Initially it was a very close battle for the lead between two Rileys. The Super Rat of Pete Candy led for the first couple of laps before dropping out to see close pursuer Robert Cobden take the lead to a comfortable win in his Riley Falcon Special.
