Just got back from Silverstone BTCC and read this.
Met him a few years ago during a test day at Indianapolis. Amongst loads of American voices, I was a lone Brit, and we had quite a talk. A seriously nice guy. I am so upset. RIP Dan. |

Awful incident. RIP Dan and my thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone else involved in the incident.
A few of the drivers seemed to have misconceptions about the standard of the race which now seem prophetic. Racing is dangerous - we all know and accept that but every effort must be made to avoid loss of life. |

I saw the incident and it looked like a racing accident, nothing more nothing less, though one with a very tragic circumstances.

I really don't know what to say right now. I'm just gutted. All auto racing fans know that it's a dangerous sport, but we've grown so used to watching drivers walk away from horrible looking crashes that when the worst happens, we're not prepared for it, and it hits you in the gut. I've seen drivers that I've admired and respected die before, but never one of my favorite drivers. Dan Wheldon was not only a great driver, a two-time Indy 500 champion, but by all reports a great person, too. He was my favorite Indycar driver, and a hero to me. I never met him, but I'll miss him...

He was a lovely bloke, gone so soon after winning the Indy 500 again this year. To think he used to get so emotional discussing his mum and her illness, now he is gone.
I won't forget you Dan, god bless. |

I feel sick in my stomach at what's happened this evening. It's been truly horrific and has taken one of British motorsports great unsung heroes. RIP Dan.

Hopefully oval races are eliminated in the future from IndyCar; just stupid and dangerous. They shouldn't have been there to begin with in the series, and they shouldn't be there now.

Dan was a wonderful man, a gritty but clean racer and a great friend. My thoughts are with Susie, Sebby and Oliver, plus everybody at Sam Schmidt Motorsports. In fact, with everybody in the paddock, and may the other drivers recover from this one.
This is just horrible. |

Honestly, you cannot judge every single oval circuit on the schedule because of one. This circuit was simply too tight and fast, like Bristol or Richmond but at 220 plus mph. But to be honest, right now this is not even an issue to me, and mourning the loss and celebrating the life of a fantastic driver and person is.
