At least it's not your day to day income, only the bit that pays for the nice things in life.

A lot of people are a lot worse, let's hope the government opens its purses soon. A delay if even a couple of weeks on its promises will be disastrous.

An opportunity to make things last longer may be. Dont change the plugs, sand blast them instead. Wont work with the tires or brake pads tho…

We haven't stockpiled anything including bread, as I fancied a piece of toast I went into our local to buy a loaf just now No chance hardly anything on the shelves, now can I live on two Mars bars until International Rescue comes to my aid ? Apart from that the pheasant the comes into our garden everyday to scrounge underneath the bird table is beginning to look more appetising

OK, does anyone know how to work out duration of a camshaft without it being in an engine? I assume lift is the difference between the nose to heal measurement minus the base circle diameter, should I factor valve clearances when calculating this? Asking as I have some camshafts I want to sell

Gerard s link gives a guide on how to measure the cam .
But the measurement starts when the valve is open , so the clearance has to be allowed for , & the fact that , if the engine has rockers with a multiplication factor , that has to be applied into the clearance
measurement .
Also to calculate lift .

Note also that the cam turns at half engine speed , so duration degrees are doubled .

If you can hold the cam in something like a lathe , with a protractor on the end , & a dial gauge onto the lobes .Then you can turn it to get the readings .
Assuming it is a pushrod engine , you know what the valve clearances are ,then you need to know if the rockers are 1 to 1 ratio so you can tell the moment the valves would open if it was in the engine .

Set the dial gauge onto the heel of the cam , then turn the camshaft until the dial goes up to the , [ corrected ]clearance .Make a note of that reading from the protractor . Then turn the cam back across the heel until the dial reads the clearance again . Those 2 protractor readings will give the dwell angle in degrees . [ Could be something like 250 odd degrees ] .
Take that figure from 360 , double it & you will have the valve open duration .
It is a bit more difficult if it is not in the engine , especially if you have to work out rocker ratio .

They're OHC XK Jaguar cams, which were a special grind by an ex racer/engineer. There's nothing stamped on them Peter apart from the original part number. I'm not too worried as no doubt they'll sit in my shed for another few years and probably end up getting thrown out.
Thanks for the help though

As an OHC they are easier to check because the cam profile is the same as timing & lift .

You've still got a lot of arses in management who have no idea of priorities though, as my wife found out today. she deals with statistics and complaints, important when things are running OK but hardly life changing in the short term at the moment. One of the senior managers is still insisting she carries on as normal despite the fact she would be better deployed on other work even if it's only phoning round to cancel/rearrange non urgent clinical appointments to take the weight off other staff.
