what is an rar file

hi guys a friend has sent me a file with an attachment that I need to get something working on my comp.

the file is called an rar file but I have no idea what an rar file even is.

so firstly what is it ?

secondly when I went to open it I get a message saying there is no program associted to open the file and that I should add it in my control panel.

so off to the control panle i went and found everything I need to do to open the file but it goves me a choice of what to open the file with.

anyone have any clues as to what program I should use to open it ???

CHEERS
Marcus

P.S sorry if this is in the wrong place

its a compressed archive (like a .zip) you need a program called winrar to open it http://www.rarlabs.com

I'm surprised they've used that format to compress it, .zip files used in WinZip can be opened in a lot more programs, but still. Hopefully you've got everything up and running okay now.

I think .rar's compresion is better, or atleast when you go to compress a file there are more compression options

You can also just compress a folder containing many files in RAR format. Winzip just lets you compress individual files.

Winzip WILL let you compress folders, one of the options allows you to maintian the directory structure inside the archive

google for winace, it's a pretty handy tool and supports all of the commonly found compressed formats including bz2.
