The meeting before the Grand Prix is the Historic meeting which has now become one of the premier events of its type in the world.
Island Magic is sort of a glorified State roaund with usually a few interstate drivers coming down to experience the magic of the Island circuit. The 50k Sports Sedan Plate usually has quite a mix of State level and national cars, the improved prooduction race has a few interstaters and the Sports Car enduro field for this year is pretty impressive with a good mix of Sports GT cars and the traditional open top sports cars. if the weather's fine I'd highly recomend everyone to go if you can make it. |

Sports/GT 1 Hour Enduro - driver change is shaping up again as blockbuster.Allan Simonson /Ted Huglin Ferrari 360GT should be close to winning pace .Challengers should come from new Vic State Champion Brett Bedggood/Harry Witham Porsche GT2 ,Turnbull/Garner , Cook/Buik, Lilley/Pusterla, Twigg/Fitzgerald, French , Kaias, and more Porsche GT3's, Murray Carter Corvette,Kane Rose Porsche 993 has another chance to impress , with apologies to those I have left out.
Class battle in B class with Paul Tresidder joined by Bill Pye to resume battle with Chris Stannard in Porsche RS CS . C class should go to Queensland MX5 of Ferrabbee or Van Roden. An army of Queeensland MX5 take on the Victorian army of 944 challenge cars in what will be the race within the race. Format is qualifying for both drivers and an invidual race for each driver on the Saturday and the 1 hour Enduro at 2 PM Sunday. Huge grid of cars and a really interesting race. Be there. |

I'll put in a big virtual cheer for old man Ferrabee in the MX-5. There's life in the old fella yet.

Unfortunately for Brian Ferrabee his NSW counterpart/nemisis/ fellow MX5 driver Brian Anderson will be absent so he will have an easier time.Hope it is better than last year when mechanical ills stopped him racing.Fantastic to see such a big contingent of Queenland competitors making the trek south for what is hoped to be a continuing event. Seems a lot of Victorians have not yet worked out it is the same distance no matter where you start.
Five states are represented in this 1 hour enduro again- I think you could say competitors are voting with their feet?wheels? |

The Sports/Gt 1 Hour Enduro was run today. Race went to John Kaias -Porsche GT3 from Matt Turnbull/Micheal Garner , 3rd was Mal & Blake Lynn who passed Brett Bedggood/Harry Witham GT2 on the last lap to grab 3rd outright. Allan Simonson/Ted Huglin Ferrari 360 Gt had wheel bearing problem after Allan had a sensatoional drive thru the field after taking over . Set new lap records on several succesive laps.Fantastic sight to see. Class battles add depth and real interest to these races for both competitors and spectators alike.
Interesting point about actual paying customers as this meeeting continues to draw a reapectable crowd. |

Actually, Simonsens failure in the 1 hr was a broken gearbox out put shaft (LH). The right rear wheel bearing failure was during Ted's 5 lap race, and he did well to hang on to the car with about 10mm of flop at the rim edge.
Poor Ted, that 1hr failure hurt like hell. I think Allans closing speeds over Lukey was around 80kph..... scary for both drivers.... |

Interesting point the speed differential saw a lot of give and take from drivers and no real incidents to speak of .It is scintillating for some of the slower( not a nice word to use as respectable lap times were still achieved) as the quick cars worked their way thru the lapped cars without incidence. It has beeb 6 of the 1 hour races in a row without a safety car , despite some very big fields. The difference in speeds really highlighted how quick some of these cars are.

oops, I should just correct myself there... the wheel bearing failed in Teds qualifying, not his race... and was fixed (miracle, as parts were mega rushed to track) for Allans 5 lap race.
I think big speed differentials are not a bad thing. In fact, closely matched cars (say 5% slower) lead to desperate lunges, but if an intelligent driver knows his car is 10% faster, he'll do a clean pass when it suits. it annoys me no end on club days, when organisers try to group cars into speeds. It NEVER works to everybodies satisfaction. If you enter the track KNOWING there is slower traffic, you expect it... which is safe. |
