I work as a Business Analyst involved in developing computer systems. Part of that entails screen design - and I have no problem with the revamp (except maybe the new icons on the left hand column on the thread home page).

Proof that I'm a "Business" Analyst, though. What on earth is "liquid", "skin", etc etc......... (I do recognise resolution). I think I'll stick with the day job - at least I get paid for not understanding technology and sometimes it helps (amazing how you can challenge a proposed IT solution by saying "Uh?").

Well, I like the new look, but have had to abandon it cos it's getting on my tits to scroll everything all the time and I can't have all the info on screen. Yes, another primitive pooter.

I'm on a laptop with a 1024x768 display at the moment and the Liquid style works fine for me. What's the Liquid Testing one?

It took a while, but I really like the new design now.

I'm on the "solid" style at the moment, as I've given the new design a go, but can't stand those orange icons. Sorry

Don't worry Chris - I never changed from Solid. In fact it was me that campaigned for it when we upgraded the last time!

I do like the new design, but I just prefer the old fashioned display!

After a bit of detective work I've discovered that it's the advert blocks that are causing the bottom scroll bar on 800x600 displays. The combination of the adverts plus the graphic "end caps" and the borders just pushes the display "over the edge".

I'm looking in to the best way to deal with this.

Ok, the new design should now work on 800x600 displays without having to turn adverts off.

Oh, and just to prove what a sick puppy I am, I'm adding this post from a Virtual PC running Windows 98 with Internet Explorer 5 and an 800x600 display and it looks fine.

Sideways scrolling?

Not sure if this problem is related but I am having difficulty with the display of the site.

I select Liquid. Now I have moved to Vista with IE7 and find that I am having to scroll sideways.

I can select various other schemes but on refresh the selected scheme is discarded and Liquid applied again but still requiring me to use the side scroll to see all the page.

(IE7 used full screen on Vista Business, 1280 x 1024 resolution).

Or has the work necessary to get Vista running on this machine blown my mind and I'm doing something really silly?

Regards

Jim

And the display of smilies has gone funny. (Note technical term there.)

See attached screen shot.

Jim: Liquid is the default style and will apply if you ever visit tentenths.com.

As for "liquid" requiring scroll bars on IE7 and smilies in the wrong place. This must be at your end or Vista as I'm running IE7 at 1280x800 and there's no scroll bars, there's no scroll bars as low as 800x600 with IE7 and FireFox.

I've even tested it on a "Virtual Machine" running Windows 98 and IE5 and it doesn't exhibit scroll bars at 800x600 or 1280x800 so have no idea why you're having issues.

To be honest, I've not tested Vista and IE7 but should add that to my test environments.

OK.

I have now reverted to my old machine. (IE7 and XP Pro. 1152 x x 864) Behaviour has reverted to what I expected. Smilies are back in place.

So that leaves me thinking that Vista is probably causing three snags:
  • Chosen display style cannot be changed from the default.
  • Page width is not behaving as 'liquid' but fixed at something larger than 1280
  • Display positioning of smilies is quirky.
Good luck! Let me know if I can test anything for you.

Regards

Jim

OK, the new design is growing on me, I do like the fact that it shows me what threads I have posted on. Very useful for those with a short memory span like me!

One negative...the site is very very slow to load when viewed on my Ipaq, Tenths was always slower (on the Ipaq) than any other site I use anyway. Is there any merit in a "lower content" (not sure what the technical term might be!) with less "stuff" to load?

Try the "PSP" style (drop down menu bottom left of the screen), which has less graphics as well as a smaller width to fit onto smaller screens.

Cheers I'll try that, do I do that in my profile if so I'll have to have it whenever I view will I or do I just set the Ipaq to that (sorry technology started passing me by about three years ago!)

Just choose it from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page when you're using the Ipaq, and make sure you bookmark tentenths.com/forum instead of tentenths.com that way your choice will be retained on the Ipaq.
