Alfa Romeo for 2008

Endurance Info are reporting that Alfa Romeo will do a GT2 version of their 8C sportscar.

Highly encouraging in all sorts of ways.

Now that should be good! Aren't Alfa part of the FIAT group like Ferrari? Wonder if that means they would drop the 430s. I'd obviously rather they ran both!

Yes, and didn't Maserati have plans to build a legal GT car as well?

So we could have Alfa, Ferrari and Maserati in GT2

Isn't the engine in the 8C based on a Maserati engine?

ASFAIK Maserati have moved from under Ferrar's wing to be in the same Group as Alfa - all under FIAT ownership.

In that case surely FIAT's attack will be based around a new Ferrari or Maserati as the GT1 and the glorious 8C Alfa will be the GT2?

The MC12 is ace car but not eligible for everything so surely it makes sense for Fiat to develop a new car to compete with Aston and Corvette in GT1.

As hammerdown suggests, if a Ferrari becomes the new GT1 contender then the logically the Alfa will replace the F430 in GT2?

Much depends on the future of GT1 as the premier GT class i'm sure.

I think that new Alfa 8c will not exclude Ferrari 430 Gt2 plans.
430 is very important for Ferrari, finally they have a competitive (and official) car to compete with Porsches, and this is very important for ferrari's market.

Maserati and Alfa Romeo are a company more united than Ferrari and Maserati so I hape that 8c and 430 can coexist.

Ferrari says that they won't built a 599 race version, so i think that the new Maserati coupè will race again in the top class Gt1.

In February Autosport reported Maserati will replace the MC12 with a new GT1 (based on GranSport or Coupe?) for 2007/2008.

Satorian has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Maserati - GT1
Alfa - GT2

Ferrari - LMP1?

Imagine a Ferrari LMP1 with Schumacher/Raikonnen/Massa/Badoer!

And imagine trying to get within 400 metres of their pit garage!

I'd welcome any of the above to Sportscars so long as they checked their F1 attitude in at the gate!

Well, what causes their attitude is what could revitalize sportscar racing in terms of media presence and viewership: They are celebrities.

One of F1's larger appeals is being personality-driven to a great extent. Even people not actively watching F1 usually can drop a few names and know the faces, while they would have problems finding somebody to personally root for with sportscar racing and even if they watched some of it, they wouldn't have anybody at the water cooler to talk about it with.

At least in my nostalgia-tinged opinion it seems sportscar racing had more personalities back in the day when racing was dangerous. Race drivers were much more high-profile media people than they are today.

So, the F1 teams bringing their drivers into LM efforts would do a whole lot of good for media presence, a whole lot of bad for costs and privateers, and will probably remain a dream.

That is the sort of dilema you get this day and age (Porsche and Audi, etc...)
From the spectator point of view, all should race!

Why, then, is Sportscar racing on the up and F1 on the down?

F1 has been without a real "personality" for a long, long time...

Proof?

And even if it was relatively true, what are the absolute viewing ratings and attendance numbers? How many major stations carry F1 in each country and how many do the same with FIA GT or LMS or ALMS? Sportscar popularity is still a far cry from F1.

I think that's nostalgia talking. Who do you consider the last F1 personalities and in which way did they differ from today's F1 drivers, especially the more prominent ones?

Seriously try asking people who aren't interested in f1 why that is.

The kind of answers you should expect are

The racing is dull and when the drivers speak it sounds like a statement from a government minister.

The bald facts are that the busuness / sport balance in F1 has tipped way too far in favour of business interest and the results are obvious.

As for an examination of viewing figures - just have a quick google search on the subject - you'll find that in many of f1s established markets they have been losing viewers. And that's despite the fact that around 99 of every $100 spent in Europe on motorsport marketing focus on F1 -

Agreed with every phrase!

One of the reasons I like Sportscar racing is because of the variety of cars/makes involved.
The Alfa would only add to the excitement!
