Exhaust sound
you can't hear it as much on the tv, this is prob a dumb question, but I was wondering what causes the race cars to make this sound when they change gears? they make a shattering kind of sound that pops your ears when they fly past as u can see in this vid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5LdQL4m1NI

Unburnt fuel detonating in the exhaust. A trick that's been around for years to keep revs up on upshifts.
At least once every time I'm at a track a car will make me jump doing this. Especially if I'm on the yellow flag and can't see them coming! |

It's the throttle cut, to minimise gearshift time.

Was told something along the lines with the V8 boys that when you get the real big bang between the gears it's because the driver has gone into the hard-cut area, rather than in the sweet spot. Engine double cutting the fuel/spark, so bigger bang.....

Most annoying sound ever there is a guy doing this with a Turbo Escort Cosworth and should be banned, we have to run quiet these days its this sort of crap that gets the NIMBYS going.
