Heritage Touring Cars - The Legends of Bathurst

Round 2 of the Heritage Touring Cars 2013 championship is fast approaching, with a field of 30 Group C and Group A touring cars heading to Morgan Park QLD next weekend (27-28th April) to participate at the HRCC Autumn Historic meeting.

With the event featuring the under 2 litre class cars that made Bathurst famous for having "a race within a race", it's no surprise that category stalwart and octogenerian Bob Holden shall be competing amoungst a field of many "Bob Holden Motors" built and prepared ex Bathurst racers.

Additional Heritage Touring Car "Masters" (owners and drivers that raced in the category during the original "C" and/or "A" period) include John English, who shall race a Group A Supra ownerd by John Abbot, Wayne Clift in his original VK Commodore, Craig Harris in a Bob Morris XD Falcon, Frank Binding in the Army Reserve XD Falcon and Carey MacMahon, who actually drove for Bob Holden in a couple of events many moons ago - but who now gets his kicks from piloting one of the ex Nissan Motorsport HR31 Skylines.

Giving Carey a run for his money in the Group A category shall be Terry Lawlor in the ex Colin Bond Caltex Sierra fresh from his round victory at Phillip Island, Bill Pye in the ex Dick Johnson Greens Tuf Mustang, and dark horse David Towe in the menacing JPS BMW.

The Group C "Big Bangers" include Elvis (Ed Singleton's STP VH Commodore) and Lindsay Woolard in the ex Brown Edmondson ReCar VC Commodore, going head to head with the XD Falcons of Craig Harris and "Field Marshall Ford" - Frank Binding.

Across both categories shall be a variety of makes and models, big and small that will make the Lloyd Bax Handicap Feature Race on Saturday afternoon a must see, as Geminis, Celicas, Escorts, Dolomites, Gazelles, Corollas are chased down over a 5 lap dash by RX7s, M3s, Starions, Mustangs, Sierras, Commodores and Falcons.

On hand and keeping the racing clean across the weekend shall be category DSO - Colin Bond. Apparently Bondy knows a thing or two about these cars...

Looks like a good field. Hopefully I can get some rear pads into my Cossie so I can take it out for a run to watch.

Heritage Touring Cars to break records in Qld.

The Autumn Historic Race meeting at Morgan Park on April 27 & 28 will see a diverse and exciting field of Group C & A Touring Cars racing for class & outright honours in Round 2 of the inaugural Heritage Touring Cars Championship. Heritage Touring Cars are the Legends of Bathurst – the Group C & Group A cars that take us back to a golden era of Australian touring car racing, a period that saw the rise and consolidation of Australian motorsport legends such as Brock, Moffat, Johnson, Richards, Grice, Bond and countless others, driving their unmistakably raw and exhilarating Toranas, Commodores, Falcons, Mazdas, BMWs, Jaguars, Nissans and more.

Groups C & A are officially recognised by the sport’s governing body CAMS as Historic cars and only genuine cars may compete in the events. Replicas, lookalikes or tribute cars are not eligible. These cars are the real deal and as a genuine Historic class, the competitors are required to present the cars in their correct period specification and livery, as they were, “back in the day”, thereby providing older fans with a glorious nostalgia trip and giving younger race goers a chance to see Touring Car racing, “the way it used to be”.

Group C Touring Cars were the premier category in Australia from 1973 to 1984, competing in the Australian Touring Car Championship and the Bathurst 1000. At the end of 1984, Group A Touring Cars took over, racing in the ATCC and Bathurst until 1993. Group C was a uniquely Australian class, especially designed to give Australian race fans the chance to see their cars go head to head on circuits across the country.

Group A was created by the world governing body to enable manufacturers across the globe to compete against each other on a level playing field. This enabled Australian competitors to take their own cars to Europe & Asia to test themselves against the world’s best.

This year’s event at Morgan Park is expected to be a blockbuster. 30 entries have been received, making this the largest field ever assembled in Queensland, since the cars gained Historic recognition. Not only will we see a record grid size, but many of the class lap records are expected to fall also. Last year’s National historic race meeting at Morgan Park was only the second time these cars have raced on the newly extended 3.1km Morgan Park circuit. Now, with a grid that is abundant in both quality and quantity, vying for points in the new Championship, times are expected to tumble.

The race for line honours in Group A will be a battle of brute force versus technology, two VK Commodores and two Ford Mustangs, all with 5-litre V8 engines, will be taking on the high-tech turbo wizardry of two all-conquering RS500 Sierras, a Mitsubishi Starion and the ex-Mark Skaife Gibson Motorsport R31 Skyline, run by reigning champion and lap record holder Carey McMahon.

The ex-Jim Richards/Tony Longhurst JPS BMW M3 will be fighting to keep it’s Group A under 3-litre lap record from a former JTCC BMW M3 Evo and champion Brisbane driver John English who will be guest driving in the ex-Win Percy, ex-Barry Sheene, ex-Peter Williamson Toyota Supra .

The ex-Bob Holden Corolla Sprinter, which currently holds the Group A under 2-litre record will be fighting off Bob Holden himself in his ex-TOM’s GB Corolla and the 1987 2-litre ATCC winning Peter Jackson Nissan Gazelle, making it’s long awaited return to racing.

Group C outright honours will be hotly contested by the ex-Allan Browne Re-Car VC Commodore and the ex-Allan Grice/Colin Bond STP Commodore, which was nicknamed Elvis by Gricey’s team because it had so many hits. Flying the Ford flag against the General’s army will be the famous Army Reserve XD Falcon and a similar ex-Bob Morris machine, now run by former V8 driver Craig Harris. Fellow collector Robert Ingram will be keeping everyone wide awake with his pair of buzzing Mazda RX-7s.

Group C under 2-litre honours will be a terrific fight between no less than five of the ubiquitous Mk.2 Ford Escorts, three Geminis, a Dolomite Sprint and one of the Celicas, made famous at Bathurst in the ‘70s & ’80s.

With nostalgia induced memories of sponsor names and liveries of days gone, the sensory overload provided by the huge flares and spoilers, the rumbling open exhausts and the distinctive AVGAS aroma, it is little wonder that motorsport fans are flocking to events that feature these significant race cars of yesteryear.

Round 1 of the Championship was held at Phillip Island in March and round 3 will be at Brisbane’s Lakeside Raceway in July, before the cars head to Sydney’s Muscle Car Masters in September for round 4 and the final round at Historic Sandown in November.

Heritage Touring Cars - the Legends of Bathurst

I understand that the under 2L guys want their own recognition, but I think it's a shame that we won't see them battling with the "big boys" in one 30 car field.

Ah I see. The schedule that Patto posted is a bit jumbled up, must have happened with the cut and paste.

I thought it was a bit strange that the Heritage Touring Cars were only on once on Sunday.

I really should have got myself sorted and entered the Sierra into the regularity, oh well next year.

Deal me in too. I've been to Morgan Pk a few times and have been impressed with the slick and well organised running of the place.

It's a credit to the whole team there.

And, thanks David for posting the schedule.

Will do David. Shame Craig's Starion had similar issues in the last week! Hopefully yours are sorted now though mate. Starion engines are a tad cheaper to build than M3 engines!

Interesting weekend. The under 2 litre race was a cracker with everyone pedalling really hard. Patto and a few others have put in a big effort to make things work as well as they did over the weekend. The HRCC were very organised and so friendly and relaxed. The was none of the Rent-A-Cop attitude you get at some capital city tracks. It was a megalomaniac free zone. And for a change I've got an engine to rebuild as it let go right as I was greeted with the chequered flag.
I can't wait till next year.
