Wasting no time. This was leaving Sao Paulo airport.




As for who knew, Mark made the decision to leave F1 before the season opener in Melbourne. His family, Ann, Mateschitz, some of Red Bull Racing hierarchy, and a few of his close colleagues knew of his decision. It isn't because of what happened in Malaysia as some people would like to believe.

I read that Mateschitz was kept in the loop and the fact he had a day with press in Melbourne was a strong hint that it looked like being his last year. I am told that whilst Mateschitz was made aware pre announcement nobody in the RBR team was aware until the announcement.

Mateschitz and Webber certainly did seem to enjoy a unique relationship based on mutual respect. I recall reading that Mark used to stay at his island getaway, something that nobody else in the RBR fraternity had done (by choice or lack of invite I am not sure)

He would almost certainly have been excluded had he done that. At the end of the race, the driver must be weighed with all his equipment, i.e. helmet, gloves, HANS etc. That weight plus the weight of the car as it finished must not be less that the minimum specified weight. Most cars are run so close to the minimum, that the loss of the helmet could (and probably would) have put him under-weight.

Incidentally, there's only one "l" in marshal.

Webber may of course have a little room to manoeuvre in given his weight and size!

Well I just spent 2 hours watching youtube videos of
a show I have never seen or knew of. I tripped over it
while looking at the Webber links.

"F1 Legends". What amazing interviews and race footage!
Brought back a lot of lost memories.
