Heritage GTs at Snetterton, 1/2 June 2007

This formed part of the British GT/F3 package. As some of you will have realised from the AMOC thread, I wasn't at Snetterton on Saturday, I but can tell you that there were 38 cars entered on the programme of which 34 turned up for qualifying, 31 started but only 20 finished.

The Peter Hall/Andy Rouse Chevrolet Camaro had qualified on pole but was only 5 laps into qualifying when it broke its 15 year old CWP and was not to be seen in action for the rest of the weekend, since a replacement couldn't be found in time. Another of the non starters was the lovely Hertz liveried Shelby Mustang 350GT of Jonathan Bloohn & Nigel Hoad.

It was left to the Morgan Plus 8s of Rick Lloyd/Peter Horsman and Grahame and Oliver Bryant to battle for victory, and it was the latter that took it after Oliver Bryant had come from some way behind. The other quick Camaro, that of Arthur Thurtle and Roger Bennington expired, it would seem, on lap 2, and the only car which prevented a Morgan plus 8 1-2-3 was the MGB GT V8 of Roy and Russell McCarthy who came 3rd to beat the Chris Williams plus 8 by just under 2 seconds. I'm not going to give a complete run down of results because you can view them on MST, here:-

Tomorrow, I will post a few pics up from the second race, which took place on Sunday

Sunday's race saw 29 cars come to the grid, although 9 of those failed to reach the end. I'll endeavour to post pics of as many of them as possible.

The early laps saw a very good battle for the lead, between the two Morgans and the McCarthy MGB GT V8. All the time that the Horsman/Lloyd Plus 8 (27) was at the back of this trio the first 3 were very close. However, once it had worked through to the front it was like the proverbial cork out of the bottle, since it moved away to leave the other two to continue their battle. Unfortunately, the MG started to fade and retired after 14 laps. Pitstops did not alter the outcome and the Morgans ran out 1 and 2, but in a reverse of the previous day's result. In this pic, the 'cork' has begun to escape!:-

It really wasn't a weekend to be driving American muscle. Of 4 Camaros and 3 Mustangs that ventured forth to Snetterton over the weekend, only 3 got to start the second race, and only 1 actually finished! This is the Andrew Knight Mustang fastback which had managed to finish 18th on Saturday, but retired having completed just 3 laps on Sunday, a feat it shared with the notchback version of North/North:-

It was left to the sole survivor, the Alec Hammond/Andy Jenkinson Camaro to salvage American honour. Despite only completing 6 laps on saturday, and therefore having to start from the back of the grid on Sunday, a fine drive by both saw them come through the field to take the final podium position:-

The Wheeler/Hyde DB4 finished 5th overall on both days:-

Peter Horsman should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
It was a shame that after posting a 1:14.6 in qualifying, Andy Rouse was unable to come out in the Camaro due to back axle issues. Our P2 time of 1.15.4 was good for us. Andy's co-driver was slower, whereas Rick Lloyd and I are close. And then there was Ollie. It would have been interesting. After I pitted (in lead from Ollie, just!), Rick's lead due to quicker pit stop was eroded as he had fuel starvation issues towards end of race. The Thurtle Camaro was very quick in its nearly two laps (having had a suspension tweak after qual) but, boy, did it let go big time when it punctured round Coram. Ollie and I peddling around right behind it were wondering where it was going to end up (as no doubt was Arthur!). Even tho' it stopped inches short of the Russell tyre wall, Arthur buggered the gearbox probably trying to find a gear afterwards in the heat of the moment.

Race 2 was fun in the first session, and I felt confident dicing around with Russell McC, who took the first stint from Roy. The Bryant car had a broken valve spring so was a DNS. As you say, once it had all settled down a bit, it was a case of getting to the finish as gently as poss.

It's a bit of an odd series (especially for the purists), but it gives the opportunity for big cars to dice spectacularly (US and Brit V8s, Astons and so on) which the 'crowd' seem to enjoy after the main event races which, whilst impressive, can be a bit processional. So if, on occassion, my tail was a bit leery, I trust that you'll forgive having a bit of fun.

Peter, great to get an 'inside' line on this; I think these cars are great fun and there is plenty of room for such a 'non purist' series. The the front runners are very quick. Last year Arthur told me that his Camaro was putting out about 550bhp and getting close to 170mph at the the end of the Revett Straight, so this is seriously quick and spectacular stuff. We did 'lose' a lot of cars though, but I wouldn't have thought that the bigger cars were particularly overstressed; just a bad weekend for them; I guess!

And thank you for clarifying the DNS for the Bryant car in the second race; my post above does not make it clear that it was the Morgan of Chris Williams that was the third car in my first picture and that he finished second.

I'll post some more pics up later.

Periscopes up! Having finished 12th on Saturday, Pat Thomas went one better on Sunday with his Lotus 47:-

Richard Master was unable to get his XJS to the flag on either day:-

Nor was the 1460cc Mini of Harvey and Clive Death able to do so! However, Chris Scragg, who was at Silverstone on Saturday (see AMOC thread) was able to bring the E-type home in 15th on Sunday:-

The Bernard/Bernard Porsche 911 finished 17th on both days:-

Just wondered, I was driving it! We finished both days so look forward to seeing them. Thanks for my ticking off in the Irish forum earlier, but my feelings about the HRCA are also passionate!

Not a ticking off, merely my attempt at diplomacy to keep the thread balanced and amicable.

Right, off to the AMOC thread to post up the next race.

Great review yet again John.
Yes I know this photo is of the Formula Fords, but is shows the path Arthur's Camaro took with it's puncture!

Thanks Andrew, that must have been quite a spectacular 'off'.

Ok, so here is the TR6 of Jonathan and Richard White, which as Jonathan has already advised, finished on both days, 15th on Saturday, and 18th on Sunday. Can we persuade you, Jonathan, to tell us how the weekend went for you? Any dramas?:-

The 2nd place (Sunday) Morgan of Chris Williams. The degree of lock on the wheels, does not appear to reflect the amount the left arm is around the steering wheel!!:-

Les Gobel is always great value for money. On Saturday, sharing with owner, George Miller, the Aston V8 failed to finish, but here, on Sunday, apparently driving solo, he brought the car home, 4th:-

One of two very smart Ford Escorts, this is yet another that failed to finish on Saturday but successfully completed the race on Sunday, driven by Nick Stagg to a good 9th place:-

TR6

No Dramas John, apart from the first lap on the rolling start trying to go up the inside of Richard Masters XJS and an E-Type, then realising that I was a tad fast into Riches Corner. Of Course spun left, then right and the Kimber-Smith Cortina flew past me!

Haven't raced at Snett before, so quite a learing curve, if you pardon the pun,

Anyway got going again, at the back of the field and with the bit between my teeth got to grips with the car and the circuit, Revett Straight is hilarious, kept hitting the rev limiter in Fourth at 7,100. Which reminds me must get that turned up a bit!

Finished 15th, eventually, before pitting was just behind Mike Youles Mini.
Change was quick and Richard took over who had a great dice with the Streeter Anglia.

Race 2- Better start (no Spin) eventually got past the Anglia and an E-Type but couldn't live with the Masters 6.0 Litre XJS on Revett, he would always get under the bridge first , no matter what I did! Suddenely the Death and Youles Mins were in my mirrors. Every Corner their late braking into Russell and the esses was amazing, but on the straight the TR would power away a bit. Then after a stupid line into the Bombhole, while allowing a Morgan to pass, the black Chalmers 911 appeared and another battle began. As if two minis weren't enough!
Eventually, got bumped off onto the grass by the 911 at Coram and bent a steering arm. So pitted and inspected the damage, nothing serious but lost 5 mins in the pit. Richard took over and totally went for it, chased everything in front of him and was reeling in the Black 911 again. But the chequred flag arrived and we finished 18th, so not bad considering the rather long stop.

At the end of the day, we really enjoyed the weekend, the class is fantastic to race in and all the cars are superbly prepared and presented.

So a baptism of fire for us newcomers, but a fantastic weekend racings all round!

Will be at Snetterton on 27th/28th July. (With a slighted adjusted rev limiter, I hope)

Thanks for the Thurtle Camaro images badgerb!

Great to get another inside experience from a driver. Many thanks, Jonathan, and your report answers a question I wanted to ask. I had noted that you had come in 15th on Saturday at an average speed of 77.26 mph with a best lap of 1.24.556, whereas on Sunday your average was just under 74mph but with a best lap of 1.23.601. You have explained all!

One virtue that some racing drivers don't display is patience! No pictures for Saturday, Gordon, but well done on coming 14th and with a class win. This was taken on Sunday. I have another which I will post later, since I have some questions to ask!!:-

Sunday's winners; the Horsman/Lloyd Morgan:-

And here is another that didn't finish on Saturday but was a able to do so in Sunday. Geoff Kimber-Smith was 13th in his Mk1 Lotus Cortina:-

And yet another! The other Escort, that of Laki Christoforou (wrong! - see Gordon's post below - JT) which completed just 1 lap on Saturday but finished 10th on Sunday, and that included a spin out of the Esses, starting roughly where this picture was taken!:-

The last group of pics for this event!

Just to clarify my error, above, this is the Laki Christophorou Escort which finished 10th:-

Jamie Boot finished 7th on Saturday in the Tusca V8, and was going well on Sunday but pulled off at the Esses after 16 laps:-

Exiting the Esses and heading for the Bombhole:-

Gordon, you can't park it there .... not even on the last lap!:-
