im not sure how long mines been a live, but, it refuses to read anything but a dvd anymore. it needs to be rebooted a a fair few times to get soul calibur 3 to load and doesnt load tales of the souls anymore and gt4 occasionally has the red clock of doom.

I've had mine for 3 years I think, and I'm not convinced it will last much longer! Mine makes a weird rattling noise whenever it is turned on, probably because I've knocked it off my desk several times.

My PS1 lasted for 6 years (it eventually didn't read most of my games so I got a PS2 instead), so you would have thought a beter console would last longer...

Got mine Christmas 2001 - my first one lasted three weeks, got a new one on warranty, and that's still with me - but, is really picky about which games it likes. It won't play GT4, I have to nick my brothers for that - and, it takes ages to load some of the newer games. It's getting old now.

to all ,! yes I lol at some comments. dropping knocking off desks etc,. I've done the same at some stage. the reason I did this is because mine too wont play my favorite game GT 4. no it 's getting picky at what it wants to play. my son and I play it alot daily. I may try and sent mine to Sony too and see what happens. I reckon my one has a mind of its own , but we still keep tryin aye. Rob.

A problem with mine and the rattling it makes is that I can't let it do GT4 endurance races overnight because it's so loud I can;t get to sleep.

I hope it holds out until the PS3 is released...

I've had mine since late 2002 and it's always been fine. I can't believe some people's have only lasted three years!! I'd want a refund - you'd never buy a telly and expect it to break down after that long!

I get the 'hand me downs' from my daughter ,the one I got only plays dvd roms and sometimes takes 5 or more attempts before a game loads
That's one of original PS2s,the second one my daughter had, worked well for a few years but then started making funny noises.Decided to trade in for the compact version, that'll do till the arrival of the PS3 .

The first generation Optical reader lasers went bad, after a while- i replace mine last season. Now it works a treat- until PS3 comes out in winter >
I still would wait for gen 2 of that unit as well.
