Was Group C the best?

Was Group C the best sportscar racing series ever?

I say yes because it attracted the best cars and was also the series of the Porsche 956/962. My fave sportscar ever!!

I don't know, I'm only 14. But it must have been great.

Overall I vote no. From a competition/factory involvement category Group C(or its US bretheren GTP) probably was the best, but as for the cars themselves, I was not all that impressed as most people were. I like the current open prototypes and those that ran in WSC a few years back, plus the cars of the 60s before the 917 came along.

Group C was it in the late 80s, but in the early 80s it was a porsche benefit, which ruined the World Endurance Championship, which was a great concept, but by the time Jag, Merc, Mazda & Nissan and so on got serious in the World Championship, it had been reduced to 430km races, which harmed it.

It was also strong because you had a world series, USA IMSA series, and the Japanese Group C championship.

I loved the Group C cars. Probably not the prettiest sportscars, but they were certainly hard. Seemed to prove even a brick could fly given enough power! The later Group C, such as the XJR14, did develop into more slender machine. Despite this I suspect that the late 60s early 70s could have been the peak of sportscars. GT40s, 512s and of course the 917s.

Genrelly I prefer closed cars, I think they look better. This is partly why I like the current Bentley and also the Toyota a couple of years back. (must have been good to tempt me to support a Japanese car!)

Another good era was probably the 50s. When sportscars were developing technology as much as F1 wa (e.g. disc brakes on the Jaguars).

The best times seem to be when the sportscars where close to a match for the F1 cars...

Fair enough, I'm not going to argue! Loved the Jags and Porsches.

I'd say group c was the best but it has been overtaken by the GT1 and now the LMP 900. It was good in it's time but it's time has passed.
