but for sure there should be a distinction between GOAT driver vs GOAT F1 driver.
Indeed

Button gave an interesting interview last year...he said getting within 4/10ths is easy, finding those last few tenths is incredibly difficult

Tbh you can’t compare drivers in other sports, just because one driver can apply his craft in multiple series, it doesn’t make him better or worse than other drivers, everyone has different skill sets.

You’re all wrong anyway....John Force with 16 NHRA World Championships is clearly the best driver in the world....even if he can’t fit in an f1 car.

Hamilton is the best f1 driver of his era, That’s all we can say....any more comparisons are pointless

They were saying on Radio 5 Live, Verstappen didn't want to start on the softs.

Listened to it on the radio. Where to begin?

No false dawn from testing and FP, Verstappen really is a genuine title threat to Merc. Good job by Leclerc too

Gasly, I’m really getting convinced by him more and more. Great session by him. I wonder how him and Albon are thinking seeing Perez down the order? Suddenly they don’t look so bad? Howeve it’s early days yet. Shame what happened to Yuki in Q2 after that great Q1

Fred may have had 2 years out of F1 and is coming up to 40, but he still gets the maximum out of his car

Haas look like they will get the wooden spoon in the constructors championship, which I was predicting even before this weekend. And Mazepin isn’t exactly improving his reputation after what he did in Q1 is he?

It’s a good thing to find a problem with F1.

I think something different is going on though. F1 now requires full commitment and there are more races. Add to that there is an expectation that you give it all from those funding you.

So rather than him being a specialist, it is a reflection that he doesn’t have the opportunity. He’d do fine in pretty much any other series.

And this it hasn’t been that different for 30 ish years.

Correct. Surely if you’re not 100% committed on f1 from the driving front then you are leaving performance on the table.

Don’t think the likes of Andretti, Stewart or Moss had to worry about doing lengthy engineering debriefs, simulator days and 23 races....they had time to explore other series often for the same manufacturer

Both Mario Andretti and Stirling Moss drove for lots of different manufacturers in different series. Stewart's the exception, racing for the Owen Racing Organisation, in F1, the Tasman series and Le Mans. Otherwise during his time at Matra and Tyrrell, he just raced in F1.

Edit: Stewart raced in Can-Am in '71 for Carl Haas, finishing third in the championship.

its not often, but agree with everything you say here!

Perez though hey!

i also wonder what the 'junior' RB drivers think of Perez in that seat...for sure its early days but maybe they think that 2nd RB seat is more of a curse then a blessing.

after today (and if they hadn't already), surely Horner and Marko put all their eggs in the Max winning the title basket rather then give any thought to the constructors?

that said, i am looking forward to seeing a Perez special from 11th on the grid.

Pérez was only 3/10ths off max all weekend including Q2....just got unlucky with the faster runners on softs. His grid position looks far worse than his speed

To be fair, that would have compromised his race (i know starting in 11th will too), and not even sure red bull could have predicted the top 12 would be covered by 0.6 seconds.....let’s not forget max ended that segment in 7th or so.
