Just got my entry in...a different beast this year after my disaster in 2019, now in a Mk1 Eunos (aka MX-5). I was thinking it'd mean my target number of laps in session E might be lower than in the Impreza, but looking at the past few years most MX-5s were asked to do 13, same as the Subaru. A third of the power, maybe half the weight, can it be done?!

Anybody going to this? Seems like the lap targets have gone down a lot this year, maybe they know it's going to be wet!
If any photographers are heading to the Pom, my number is 38, white Mazda |

I've put it in my shared Google folder here. Also competitors' instructions and site plan. Looking forward to seeing and hearing the GT40 in the flesh! |

Given the VSCC's propensity for announcing the wrong winner it would be worth someone checking (who took part) that they have noted forced induction for the provisionally declared #1 & 2
There was a period three or so years back when that was deemed 'too hard to police' |

virtual superchargers used to be of the utmost importance to get an entry for smaller engined sports cars
Elises used them from time to time... RuE |

I'm sure the old guard are already reeling at the thought that a Japanese car built in the current century could possibly win the Pom and are exploring every opportunity to challenge the result. I'm also wishing there had been rain in one of the years I entered my Subaru in the competition! |

I entered a 1926 Rolls Royce Phantom once.
That could never win as the huge displacement of over 6 litres is punished by the handicapping formula. Anyways, when I got the entry list, the number of laps that I had to looked impossbly high, especially when compared to other cars in the entry from the same era. Phoned the VSCC..... turned out that they had car down as having disc brakes sure, yes in a 1926 Phantom The VSCC system for the POM certainly is not completely error proof. But, its charming event So if rather live with the mistakes and enjoy the atmosphere rather than seeing beeing perfectly organised and sterile Having a Japanese car winning the event is not the end of civilisation Having a Chinese car doing that is more of threat I hear that DongFeng will be entering a factory team next year RuE |

In my experience of running nineteen times the VSCC find the whole thing far too complicated and simply want the easiest way out.
The attention to detail has been regularly an issue and dismissed as 'it is only a bit of fun' - what they missed was that more than a few took the whole formula very seriously. It was the lack of accuracy that stopped me entering. |

Not sure of the specific cases RT mentions, but there have been some significant changes between the provisional and final results in recent years, and at least in 2018 many turbocharged cars moved down the order as if the scorers had only just realised they should have had that adjusted for on the handicap (capacity *1.3). The entry form asks if your car has a turbo or supercharger but this is the only VSCC event which allows modern cars, so they are probably not very aware of which cars do or don't have them.

The primary results after the 2019 event declared Alex Ames in a 1974 Chevron B8 the winner and that formed the basis of the press releases. Later and still in the provisional period someone worked out (I assume) that this car was using the V5 of a BMW 2002 and was not registered and it got excluded. Sadly history had moved on but in reality the Diffey Escort was the real winner.
Forced induction makes a big difference to the Pom formula and there have been periods when because it is too much like hard work for the VSCC they did not really bother to include that aspect in the computations so a 944 turbo was just run as N/A on capacity alone. The provisional 1 and 2 this year would not be my first choice of steed to try and win it outright and of course the weather played a factor but someone for the sake of accuracy should ask the question. |

The standout car for me in Bob's photo is the ex Bonnier Alfa 1900CSS Zagato owned by Chris & Ellie Mann (Green no 50) - such a rare car.

Can someone explain why there seems to be a lack of car safety equipment in Bauble's pictures? Are these High Speed Trials and do they have different rules?

That is because they are "high speed trials" and not races, on paper at least.
The POM is meant for road registered cars, not race cars. As a consquence normal seat belts as fitted by the manucafturer are acceptable, for instance. If somebody entered a Chevron B8 with a borrowed V5 from a completely differend road car, that is really very cheap. It was a fad a few years ago to do the POM in the most ridiculous car possible, preferebly bought for 500 pounds off Ebay or something like that. We had fun...... RuE |
