Chiefy should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Newland Racing Circuit.

I suppose it should have a name, so I'll call it the Newland Racing Circuit, named after an area I used to live in. In terms of length, maybe 5.5km - though I'm not certain. The track uses numerous straights, halted by tight corners - often hairpins. Despite this I feel there are some nice curves. Four grandstands have been fitted.

I quite like it - what do you all think?

Most of the track is OK, I guess. But there are a few unpleasant doglegs in there, and you seem to have a great appreaciation for walls, that I don't share.

For example, that wall on the outside of the final section, leading from the track's largest gravel trap to the pitlane entrance, is pointless, because there is enough space there for runoff and a more flowing corner shape for the final left-hander.

The same goes for the 180 degree left-hander behind the main grandstand. There is enough space to tear down that wall and build runoff, and in turn remove the dogleg type chicane that precedes this section.

I'm not sure if the chicane before Turn 2 is a dogleg too, or if it's even necessary, because by pushing the grandstand at the bottom of the diagram more to the left, spectators get a better view and Turn 2 gets runoff space. Sounds like a good deal to me.

But the section from the 180 degree corner in the center, leading all the way round to the largest gravel trap at the beginning of the unnecessary wall, is what makes this circuit really enjoyable.

Generally I like it, though it's it's a bit condensed vertically and doesn't need all those chicanes.

Stretch the chicaneless run from T1 to what would be T2 (and the long arc at the left hand grandstand) keep the infield section as it is, but lower in keeping with the above stretch. This would then give space for the MISSING run off from what should be the last corner, and allow the pitlane to be moved to the inside, between the start straight and the infield.

The chicanes in the final section and onto the s/f straight should be removed too.

I like it. If you get rid of the turn 2-3 chicane, then that would improve it even more. I think you may have a couple too many tight hairpins which gives it a more Tilke-y feel, but in general it's quite good

Well cheers for the comments.

On the subject of walls: do you never think it would be better for a racing driver to respect the confines of his track rather than enjoy the luxury of run-off should he get things wrong? People don't seem to object to them on street tracks. It's just my view that a little wall never doesn't hurt anyone - unless they're not very good!

Anyone interested in a track edit, to show me how it's done?

Chiefy.

Here's my attempt at an edit. Please excuse my limited graphical skills with the mouse. Thanks.

Generally, I don't think that runoff should be seen as a luxury but a necessity. My parents, who traveled to the Monaco GP for a few times during the 70s, told me that there used to be grandstands then, where now there are the escape roads in Ste Devote, Casino Square and Mirabeau.
And these corners do have escape roads now, whereas the Kink in Elkhart Lake still doesn't.
I'd edit your credo to walls don't hurt when drivers are lucky.

Yannick, I understand the viewpoint, but if you push things back away from corners like "the Kink" at Road America, it becomes just another corner. The atmosphere, intimidation factor, and a good bit of the real challenge are taken away when you do that. If you screw up in a curve like Turn 8 at Instanbul, you shouldn't be able to just straighten out on the paved run-off and rejoin with a minimal loss of time.

Driver error is the leading cause of crashes. If you want to diminish the "stupid stuff" on track, provide relatively absolute consequences for dumb/ill-advised moves. The top-level cars are extremely safe, and wall technology is such that now, though the hit may hurt, the chances of real injury are fairly low. As for club/inexperienced racers, don't drive beyond your abilities! That is one of those "stupid" things, sheesh. I don't want to see anyone hurt or worse, but without some appreciable level of danger, drivers are NOT going to have the respect for each other and their surroundings that they ought to.

Sorry, about that soap box rant. Anyway, I like your edit the most Yannick, as far as the track layout goes (it's a bit hard for me to see some of the detail with those small image sizes).

Well, it is my initial design and I would like it without the alterations - but I can see that losing that chicane at the bottom-right (T2) is worth doing and I appreciate Yannick changing this. Honestly, though, I would probably leave it in as an "option" chicane, just in case... Then I would have the real corner around the outside of it, as shown in Yannick's edit. My only issue with the way the final corner has been altered is that I want a tight little corner that someone might lunge up the inside of to gain that all-important higher position. Just a little straight between the final turn and the preceding U-bend might be enough to encourage someone into a bold move - and for this I prefer the way SBF has tackled the course.

In summary, I appreciate that both of your attempts have brought greater merit to the circuit as a whole. Thanks.
