Aside from the watercooled heads, the engine in the old Porsche 956/962C was based off the block used in the Porsche 930/911 Turbo.

Never or less, this kind specifying what engine it is is sometimes like hunting a witch. Last source what I read, according SC365 notes from Watkins Glen here http://sportscar365.com/imsa/iwsc/wa...ay-notebook-3/ is that Porsche’s new 2017-spec 911 GTE car has been testing with a normally aspirated engine. It’s understood a decision for the N/A engine came prior to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The 9a1 had been out for a number of years and based on his statement and the fact that the Mezger is still in the RSR, he must have thought that it wasn't the foundation for a race engine? Or maybe the millions are being spent on the 9a1? |

If Porsche is waiting for FIA-ACO to get its stuff organized, we will never see a Porsche Turbo in GTE.

I think Porsche 2017-spec 911 GTE car is NA engine , instead turbo engine, because most of the GTE car are follow the GT3 race car respectively

And of course, almost all ACO and IMSA spec cars have mufflers because of the ACO/IMSA 110db exhaust noise limit. That probably effects sound as much as anything.

For those on mobile, here's the direct video link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2W4...be&app=desktop Sounds awesome, doesn't it? I wonder if they moved the engine forward or if it's still "just" a rear-engine car. I mean, they could use the upcoming GT2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzcdoPsC01g ?) for a 911 with a mid-rear engine and then use it as a homologation car for GTE. At least that's what I would do. |

A mid engined 911 is not a 911, it´s another thing.

And early rumors were it is not the turbo as the engine development was started early this year and the turbo dominance was not expected to be as big as it was at LM. Think it was on Racer and S365 around LM and both expressed surprise it was not confirmed as a turbo early. But guess we will see for sure in a few weeks.

It sounds like the Ford GT minus the turbo/anti-lag/TC. Strange.

With Porsche knowing that they will be observed testing, I have very little doubt they've taken steps to mask this as much as possible. As for the above on antilag/TC. Antilag isn't always the fire-spitting, atomic bomb detonating pops we are all used to. Variable geometry turbo's can get you back up on the boost very easily and just as quick. TC can be driven with braking, engine timing, fuel cut, by boost... tons of ways. It actually wouldn't shock me if Porsche have designed a compound turbo setup using a smaller one to drive a larger one for always on boost. No need for antilag, and the power is always ready. Why would they? Not like any other manufacturer cares if it's turbo or NA. There's no other new GTE's for next year. I don't care if it's turbo or not, but it doesn't sound like a turbo, and at Monza it didn't sound like a turbo.

Why does GM shut down an entire PR division because a photographer got a picture of the C7R? Who knows... but it definetly happens.

I think like you, for me seems a aspirated engine too.

For what it's worth, I was listening to an old (2-3 months) MWM in the car yesterday, and Graham Goodwin said the car would be NA, whilst Hindy said he'd be surprised if it wasn't a turbo.
That sounds like a naturally aspirated engine to me. It might well be a turbo, but it doesn't sound like a turbo. |

Sounds like we'll have to wait for the LA show to find out...
