Porsche 956/962

Simple but fundamental question: how many 956s and 962s did Porsche build?

Is the rising cost of construction and advance of technology the reason why Audi couldn't churn out similar numbers of R8s?

Cripes, that's way more than I expected!

One doesn't expect Audi to churn out 200 R8s, but another half-dozen wouldn't hurt.

177 was the last approved factory example which was raced at LeMans by Brun Motorsport in blue Repsol colors , 1993 I think it was and had a notation on the rear wing in french-swiss "Merci Porsche" . Excellent car and excellent team too .....

Does that mean that they could homologate it as a GTS car ? lol , just a thought or has the homologation run out after production stopped ?

I dont think it would qualify for homologation because they are all racing versions. But if they were to qualify for GTS they would have to build 25 road goin versions. Under older rules the car would have already qualifed as a production car because Porsche did this with the 917 in order to run a larger engine.

I think both 956 and 962s were numbered in different sequences for works and non-works cars. So the customer cars started with 101, and the works with 001. I think 10 works 956s were made, ie 001-010, don't know how many 962s.

If this is right it means that there were 'only' 77 customer 962s. I think there were 18 customer 956s made. Including works cars, I suspect the total is nearer 120, plus all the 'non-Porsche' cars, eg Schuppan/Lloyd/Fabcar etc.

That´s right. That the same number scheme that was used by the 993GT1 and GT1-98. The factory cars are 0xx-099 and the customer cars 1xx-xxx. In the late 80s and early 90s Joest Racing received a few 0xx cars of the 962C.
And i´m sure that some of the RLR, Thompson, Kremer, Schuppan build 962 are build up on existing Porsche 962C chassis.

Yes, that's correct about the numbering sequence...so the corrected numbers are:

Factory 956/962s= 124
Non factory= 46

Total= 170

Not a full 956, but if you have money sat around and want a good centre piece for you car collection have a look at ebay.

Someone is selling a Rothmans 956 showcar, says it has the original body work from Le Mans mounted on a space frame chasis.

ebay number 4120710876.
