John Elwin should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid

Sad as it is, I don't think it is just the HHF factor, Peter. As a journalist I had attended every Revival apart from an enforced absence in 2012/2013, up until last year. I didn't enjoy 2017 & could not work up the enthusiasm to go last year. Until then, I always thought that if I only did one meeting a year it would be Revival, but no more. No plans to go this year, but hope to do Zandvoort & Spa 6H instead.

The whole ethos seems to have changed at Goodwood. The early years were just right, with the period clothing etc providing a nice backdrop to the racing, but gradually over the years the roles seem to have reversed, & now there is just too much "other stuff".

In recent times I've enjoyed the excellent live streaming, also for FoS, as I feel that is now simply too crowded to be pleasant. Now it seems we are even to be denied that.

Like Peter Auto at Circuit de Catalunya, perhaps!

As you say the ethos at Goodwood has changed over the years, I remember the first Revival at the end of which everyone was invited for the prize giving on the pits roof and I pushed my way through the crowd to shake hands with Lord March, much to his bemusement I might add, for putting on such a splendid event. Even having been to the Le Mans Classic, the Revival really was something else to witness in the flesh but in latter years all the Goodwood events have become corporate affairs catering for the moneyed elite. 'Twas always thus.
We are very fortunate in the UK to being able to attend many other meetings at a far lesser premium but I personally very sorry for Peter M. having ended his run last year at no personal fault so ignominiously in the lovely Rover, always a favourite of mine.
BTW it has never been crowded over the far side at No Name and through St Marys where the real racing takes place.

I've noticed over the last few years there been less and less racing shown in the ITV4 programme. Too much time showing fancy dress and with talking head interviews.

I've said before that if this is the business model Goodwood want to pursue it clearly works because a sell out 100,000 or so people disagree with me! No-one will mourn that little old me isn't there, nor watching on livestream. But this time next year bruv we'll be millionaires and then look at them come crawling round

Indeed. Or:
Get it Sideways Rally at Down Ampney on 6th
the Alan Healy Rally at Cadwell in the 7th (great weekend there)
Anglesey Sprint
Etc

Eta - HSCC arent at Cadwell on 6th. Presumably because they will all be at Goodwood!

Interestingly the rally stage meeting at Goodwood in February each year is totally free to spectate but you do need thermals or be totally mad like me however the competition cars are from period correct; mk2 Escorts with 2.5 Millington engines and sequential boxes but they do sound pretty good!

Mmm, think I would prefer to stay a mere mortal and seek out motorsport activities that suit my pocket

I assume you mean “far from period correct”?
Just like Goodwood Revival!!!!

Just joking.
There are a lot of v expensive Escorts like that in rallying. Very impressive but holding the sport back in my view.

There really is nothing similar to CSCC or CTCRC period based, clubman (ish) based regs in rallying. Its either as homologated or libre with nothing in between for the clubman to be competitive in.

Thank you. Very kind words and hopefully it'll be out again in the not too distant future.

The rally cars you talk about are not really holding the sport back, they have actually rejuvenated some aspects of UK rallying, especially in Ireland.

They bear little comparison to the old cars, being utterly bespoke using high powered engines, totally one off suspension, lightweight panels, massive tyres.

They are what the Escort never was, asphalt specials! You used to have to use WRC cars or Darrians or very high level kit cars or club 4wd to win, and you still can in some ways.

They are expensive agreed, but most of the drivers are older men who have a lot of money. But at the moment on circuit events they are regularly beataen by a very good driver in a very well developed fwd kit car, running ironically the same engines as these posh Escorts run.

Now where in modern historic motorsport does that happen.....

To a massive degree, right here.

Sure I read something from G'wood a while back suggesting a forthcoming announcement regarding all the big name drivers that would be racing at the MM. Maybe I dreamt it, but perhaps not... they've found one!

Yes, I got that too. It's all a bit strange this year. Tiff didn't know that I wasn't invited.

Seems whoever is running comms is either an ignoramus or just doesn't understand what comms is about!
