Making a Seat

Help!!!

How do you make a seat with the two pack expanding foam from DT? Just tried twice with the stuff and the amount we estimated to be enough to do the whole seat barely covered my backside and then hardened!

How long do you leave it "going off" until you sit on it?
I am about 6ft and want it to go from my shoulders to about 20cm above my knee with some support around the tops of my legs.(its for a 99 Tatuus FRenault). Any tips? How much should i mix of each tin to make enough to be about 1 inch thick up my back?

Please dont tell me to get an Indy Seat instead as they are too expensive!

mattray has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
You can do it in 2 parts if you want. Start wit the bit you want to sit on, use about 1/3 of each tin. then put anoter bag down your back and pour a bit more then you used for hte first bit. If its too cold it wont expand very much. A good tip is to pour each tin into the bag and mix it with your hand by sqishing it around in the bag. Try heating up the tins a bit with a heat gun. But be careful if its too hot it will go MAD and end up all over your shoulders and the car!

Good luck!!

Matt

Use plastic cups to measure equal amounts dont just guess it will not go off .
Then put your equal amounts in to and clean tub and mix them till they turn a milky yellow use a good strong Black bag make sure theres no holes in it then pure the mix in the bag .when u get in the car try not to stand on the bag you could put a hole in it. I would suggest use 3 cups of each to start and see how far it goes its better to ad a little then a lot and it over flows.

Get a touring car and a OMP seat. Easy!

I'd err on the side of making too much, but make sure there's an overflow (another black bag taped on top) so it doesn't end up all over your shoulders! (Actually I found B&Q did extra large bin bags - one bag wasn't enough for a Caterham). You can cut off the excess with a knife when it's set. Is it too patronising to suggest wearing your race suit for the "fitting"...?

Polyurethane foam is VERY heat sensitive. Heat the room a lot! Make a tube out of 4 heavy duty bin sacks, 2 inside 2, using duct tape. Line the car with more bin sacks and go for it. You need a couple of helpers to hold you down when the foam starts expanding, oh.. it does get a bit warm. If you get it on your overalls you will NEVER get the stain out.

Seats

Have you entered for rockinhgham 3rd & 4th april?
Making seats is never an easy job & the 1st few often go in the bin. We normally use about 1 - 1.5 litres of mixed twin pack foam. It can help to slip some card down the inside of the cockpit, this stops the seat swelling into the chassis tubes & make it easier to get out. I would'nt reckomend wearing your best overalls for this job because you can get in one hell of a mess. Have an assistant with you to keep the top of the bag sealed to stop the foam escaping. I'm not claiming to be an expert on this subject but have made a couple of seats without total disaster. Good luck!
Hope to see you at Rockingham

Two part foam can be bought much cheaper from a boat yard (its used as a buoyancy aid). There was a thread all about this last year sometime, do a thread search for 'two pack foam' and you should get it. Much cheaper than any motor sport factor. Hope this helps. Oh, and whatever you do, do NOT wear your nice new overalls when making the seat, any spillage will NEVER come off.....

I would bet he has given his post! I have had that unfortunate experience, myself. Ruined a 2-race old suit!
