What did the Merc V12 sound like? from the CLK-GTR, and I dunno if it was the same engine but the Pagani Zonda too...? and I also don't really remember the old Lotus Esprit's either

Yet again I was reminded on Saturday how much I hate the painful noise of the Porsches.
Much prefer the deep note produced by the Lister or the Chevrolet Corvette in the FIA GTs. |

The Pagani at top end began to sound like a turbine spinning up . It was a great sounding engine . i heard it twice , at Sebring 2003 and at Le Mans 2003 , it sounded way nicer the second time . The Benz was just awesome .....

I didn't like the Engine in the Caddilac's in 2000. Was it called a northstar ??? They were a V8 with only 6 cylinders turbo charged. They just sounded like a long fart to me.

The 2001 Panoz LMP-07 with the Zytek V8. The sound was too high pitched to be recognized as a Panoz. Panoz's are know for their deep rumbling, ground shaking Elan V8 thunder!!!

When the CLK-GTR first raced its V12 was seriously mute compared to the Mclaren for example, but it got crisper as the season went on |

I have to cast a vote in favor of the Porsche GT3 RSR. It is quite annoying in my opinion and quite hard on the ears.
I'm quite a fan of the Audi R8, but I will agree that its engine note does not inspire. But when you hear it go by it just souds like it will keep going and going, which it does. The 4 cylinder AER turbo is also pretty boring. |

Spiteful - lovely sounds there! don't suppose you have much along the lines of the Marcos LM600? hehe - always loved that car. The Merc sounds ok, but the Ferrari is lovely

Well actually...
http://users.telenet.be/xkfcheultje/...lanchimont.wav http://users.telenet.be/xkfcheultje/Marcos-Combes.wav From the same site apparently I also have some longer files recorded at sportscar events, with lots and lots of different cars, old and new, probably the marcos too, but unfortunately no place to put them online Kinda strange to put these in the least favourite engine sound thread |

Damn shame for lack of online space - there is the option to sign up to a free service like GeoCities, and simply use it for online storage purposes (although you'd have to sign in every now and then to stop it being wiped) - if you don't like the idea too much then I'll do it! Always love to hear old and new .wav and .mp3 sounds from sportscar racing - plus those two Marcos files are just teasing!

I'll look in to it in a few days, a bit busy now.
Meanwhile I suggest you search the web and filesharing progs for your favourite car sounds, after all that's how I got them. FWIW, one of those longer files is named Flat out on le mans mulsanne straight, or something similar I've got 2-300 meg of these files, a bit hard to put them all online |

know any good places to search? I've tried looking for sounds and video many times around the web but rarely got much of a result. I don't currently use filesharing programs after some very dodgy things happened before which resulted in a hard drive being formatted and losing many many important files...

Caterpiller didn't count as was silent! I think the WRs made a pretty uninspiring noise until one of them hit the armco between Indianapolis and Arnage during qualifying-that was a nice crunch!

I remember the V8s in the early Sauber Mercs always sounded like they were on the verge of breaking down (or had a broken exhaust manifold).
I reckon that was my LEAST favourite. Only sound that REALLY sticks in the mind is the Mazda. I can recall arriving at Le Mans one year and they were running an engine in on the airport runway - Up and Down and Up and Down and ... I can, though, remember treking up to Oulton Park to see the early Marcos LM500 racers in action and the way they set off car alarms all around the circuit Cheers. |
