Bernhard and Dumas on day 1 of the test and Dumas and Lieb for day 2.

I'm quite intrigued by the choice of drivers for this test. Both Dumas and Bernhard are the most senior and experienced drivers in the team. Lieb on the other hand, is an Engineer.
Is there a reason for opting for this driver choice, or is it because these were the drivers available?
I can understand that you would want the senior driver from each car to get "experience" on a track that the team has never raced before (in the 919) to get a base line for set-up, but why Lieb...the engineer? Is this an indication of new development parts being tested? It would not surprise me. Thoughts?

At the beginning of the year, Porache called the package they took to Silverstone as R1 Spec not high downforce. Maybe I read too much into that, but I think Porsche will have a updated car for the rest of the season like they did last year.

Yes - The aero is what has me guessing: I think there are better drivers in the team (Mark Webber) for aero work than Lieb. Lieb's forte would be engineering, so if you are just testing a new aero package why would you not get one of the Aero specialists?

DSC now says Hartley will be testing too. If this is the case , then all becomes much clearer to me and my previous posts are null and void.

Can't you experience mother nature everyday by going to your back lawn, or nearest park or forest or whatever, and sit there in the wind and rain in your t-shirt and jeans? Watch those rabbits go by and insects that eat you alive (if "lucky" enough). Or go in winter and feel the cold earth and snow beneath you. Make a fire that you're perhaps not allowed to and listen what you hear in the night. Adventures in the normal life.

Then when you go to motor racing you sit in the comfy VIP room in your ironed shirt drinking Cosmopolitan and occasionally take a pause from looking at that nice lady's cleavage to that noisy thing going on outside, you know the thing in the big telly.

People do what they feel is right

Each to their own, that's not my idea of been at the race.

Most of these people will say they've been to Le Mans, they haven't though..

Not until you've got to the circuit at 8am loaded with chairs, beer, brolly, sandwiches. Waiting for the flag to drop surrounded by all those other people, huddled together.
An immense feeling!
Travelling the circuit during the race, heading to tetre rouge, Porsche curves, arnage in the pitch black. Sleeping 3hours before getting a shower and heading for the finish line on the Sunday.
Cheering the cars home in celebration.
That's Le Mans to me, you only need a general entry ticket.

It is important to understand that many of these guests were attending Le Mans for the first time. It's possible that many were attending a sportscar race for the first time. It is even likely that many were attending a race for the first time. Many of these guests are people that are used to having a certain level of comfort in their lives.
If you place them on a grassy knoll surrounded by beer swigging anoraks and unprotected from the elements, I doubt many of them would return.
We are not all the same. We like many different things and experiences.
Would I turn down a VIP invite from Porsche? Most certainly not!!!
Do I like the grassy knoll. Yes, but ....

Years ago while helping Mazda PR the new RX7 I attended a race at Pocono in a VIP suite, AC, buffet, closed circuit TV, bikinied Miss. Pocono serving etc. I left after an hour or so and have not envied the VIPs since, and that was just a NASCAR race.

...on the other hand, at least one of those guests (I know for sure) owns a 918. When you have that kind of money to spend on a car, and are invited by the manufacturer, I suppose you expect to be treated in accordance.

Not sure--it doesn't seem to be part of the "bubble" raised section of the roof.

But it is after all the team's R&D car, so it could be holding some type of sensor or is a test part.

Do you mean like this here?

If this is what you mean, then I think it is just a type of flap handle to open the door from the outside or a cabin cooling exhaust. I will try and get a better picture of it.

I think it is cabin cooling related. The Toyota has something similar but no bulge.

If I remember correctly from when images of the 919 first appeared, Spyderman, you had some difficulty accepting the car's looks as good enough to be called a Porsche. I don't know about you but the car we see today is stunning in my book, even if I can't quite put my finger on why.
