New CEO at Cams.... grumble...

CAMS's long and expensive search for a new leader has come up with a guy by the name of Rob Nethercote.

"Whilst, who completed his Doctorate in Education in 1998, has spent his working career in the education field, he brings with him a wealth of business and commercial experience which is relevant to CAMS."
-Hrmmm, does this sound like CART to anyone? 'Oh man, he sounds good...'

What does everyone think?

BTW- how is the CAMS Foundation going?

No, I'm grumbling because it isn't someone with a motorsporting background...

It was Dick Johnson that recently said at a dinner that "CAMS should start acting more as a service than as a business" (to which everyone in attendance agreed), and in my eyes, this bloke doesn't seem to be the best person for the job... there'd have to be a few people over the countryside who have an intimant knowledge of what needs to be done... oh well...

Ummmm doesn't have a motorsport background?????

Think you need to check your facts again crash....
http://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/re.../2002.VSRS.E14 Second place would be a good place to start (and look at his race number as well - earned last year) - wouldn't be a family affair would it?????

What do you want as a 'motorsport background' then?

3 Australian Driver Championship Awards, a Touring Car Title?

Or a University degree in mass marketing to pyramid manufacturers?

Sheesh - he has just as much, if not more, of a realistic background than a couple of others who have had top jobs in CAMS recently - plus he has a business side to it as well.

Ok, so he's a Formula Vee Champion, there's a start

What grates me is that in the recent past there has been a lack of communication/consideration between CAMS and their members.

I could sit here listing things all night, but one I will point out is the promised online database of drivers with CAMS licences, so clubs could see who is supposedly in their club. This was promised to clubs some 3-4 years ago, but to date we have seen big fat diddly squat (and I'm sure you or me could whip something up in a matter of days ( for you, weeks for me )). Not only is this protecting clubs, but it also protects CAMS. Imagine what would happen if the insurance companies find that there are people out there who are falsely licenced? It would become very messy for them...

Then you get onto things like the debarcle with Sports Sedans and Improved Production minimum weights etc.

Category managment fees etc etc and so on....

Good luck to this bloke, but will he be big enough to make changes down there, for the benefit of CAMS members? Not much has happened there in recent times though...

Is CAMS a business or a service?

I gather he won't be able to do the job - you appear to have judged (and convicted) him already.

Thought we went through this debate last week.....

After I posted that last message, I sort of knew what your reply would be.

I'm not blasting this new guy out of the water before he does anything, but I'm just outlining some of my concerns about CAMS. Their number one concern should be to serve their members, but in the recent past they've had much more of a business approach to their opperations. I just hope this new guy can pull enough ropes to drag the focus back onto motorsport...

So do I - that's why I am surprised you are putting him down before he even gets into the job. He has more relevant motorsport experience than any other recent CAMS CEO....at least he is home grown and understands the Australian racing scene.

Fair enough.

Just I have a nervous tick anytime someone says 'CAMS'

Just pretend they dropped an L and really meant CLAMS....

Tell you what - revisit this subject in say, eight weeks after he has taken up the job?

Deal, I'll give him 12 weeks though. By then the heavy duty shovel should have well and truly been swung into action

Can you imagine ever hearing the words:
"I'm from CAMS and I'm here to help you"

The biggest help I ever got from CAMS was when the Shiela in the office knocked back my Helmet for a CAMS approval sticker and then she left the office and I helped myself to a handfull of approval stickers!

Got a helmet that needs approval?
