It was a week or two after that he performed another stunt at Silverstone, rather upsetting the RAC blazers.

Ha, OK, thanks! Looks different… If its for chipmunks, shouldn't the places be cheek to cheek instead of in tandem?

They were really Canadian, but we did build 1000 of them under licence here.

What was the purpose of this De Havilland? Probably not bombing, photos or pilot training may be?

Pulled up by a nice girl, lucky you! No worry about the Cessna, we have a proverb saying something like "he who can drive a bus can drive a Cessna". Go on!

In military use, a two seat trainer......

It never occurred to me that it was originally a DH Canada design! I see they built 217 and we built 1000. Hence my confusion. Another 66 built in Portugal......

Had my first ever kart race last night at buckmore park (arrive and drive hire ones).Did a practice before hand which was 30 mins.Finshed P4 out of 18.The guy who was top has done project 1 karting.Qualifying unrelated to practice different grp of people went out and stuck it P9 out of 22 against chaps who have been doing it for years.Got a good start for the 30 mins race up to p8 but spun at thw end of lap 1.Resulta stone dead last and one very angry Will.Nevermind worked my way up but impossible to pass for there was only one line in the wet track.Anyway finished p14 out of 22 with a best lap of 1:12 3 seconds quicker than my fastest practice lap.Hope to go again soon .My dad said I could test his old TKM 100(might not be accurate) kart next which i am buzzing to get in.Getting the hang of it now...👍👍👍.Result at the end -one very tired 16yr old.
PS you should of seen the faces of some of the group of racers(all above 30)when they saw this little kid come in some.guy gave me quite a stare.HeHe.Bloomimg heck this is a long one .Thanks if you read it all.

When I were in't Cadet Force at skool we would be scheduled to go flying near Cambridge at least once a year though subject to what the weather was doing.

So it was never a once a year flight, sadly.

However I have a vivid memory of a flight in a Chipmunk on a rather good flying day with the pilot enjoying himself in so far as he could with a cadet aboard. Some nice climbs and dives and a fairly spectacular turn when he dropped it on a wing right over the airfield so I could look at the ground through the side of the canopy as we circled through 360 degrees.

It was a pity we could not do that every week.

Or even manage to get our attempted every year trip.

I wish I could remember which airfield it was. I don't remember it being any one of the names I can find for the Cambridge area.

Whenever I've done a kart event (only on customer indoor Kart centres) against a mixed age range I've found the inbuilt advantage of a lightweight youngster against an overweight old fart can be overcome by a combination of cunning, experience and basic aggression

May be the Escort's owner who dared to let me drive his car is on the forum? French magazine was Gazoline issue #126, tested in July 2006, registration 5FEV 5H, TC Grp2, white with black bonnet, LHD, potentially a ex-Clark car, found a rolling shell in Kenya. Located east Manchester. Fantastic souvenir. Thanks again.
PS: The right tie rod end was bent prior to my driving!
Mike, one of your friends/clients may be… If I tell you David Watkins, Neil Duncan and Barney the dog?
May be David owned REV 119K and XPU 219L before this one.

There seems to be a lot of interest in cycling in this thread.... I was put on to this story by a colleague who cycles a lot, and thought there might be some interest in these (Northern winter months) from cyclists here, particularly given the area of the race. It dates back to post WW1, and was run in the war devastated areas of Northern France and Belgium. No Lycra here...... conditions it seems were tough and cold, with the winner "Charles Deruyter pedalling across the finish line wearing a full-length woman’s fur coat, which some kindly soul had lent him to keep out the cold."

Thanks for the link EB, a great read, also you can find definitions of Rouleur etc. Well worth browsing if you have any interest in a true sport.

As for your partaking I was going to ask, but discretion and valour etc crossed my mind.

I stand corrected. I was given to understand that John Jordan was associated with the Shuttleworth Collection & was able to fly their 'planes. As to aicraft identification, it was a long time ago!

A friend of mine at school at the time lived near Jordan & told me of some of his exploits. I do remember him turning-up at Snetterton one day in a De Tomaso Mangusta - a rare beast even then. It soon attracted an admiring crowd, noting it's broad girth & LHD, someone asked how he managed overtaking trucks. "I pull out & if my passenger turns white I pull back in" was the reply! Not much dual carriageway on the A11 in those days...

I'll echo your thanks to E.B. - a fascinating read especially within the context of the times.

The description reminded me of this piece that may be of interest to anyone with an interest in WW1 history.

The Link explains the background to a PDF document linked in the text that I found especially enlightening when I first read it a couple of years ago.
