From Robin Miller's Mailbag today regarding entries, nothing really earth shattering:
" Well, confirmed we've got Ganassi (4), Penske (3), Andretti (4), Foyt (1), Schmidt Peterson (2), KV (1), Rahal Letterman Lanigan (1), Carpenter (1), Sarah Fisher Hartman (1) and Herta (1). You can assume Dale Coyne for at least one and probably two cars and Panther likely for one. So that's 22 full-timers, plus a good chance Rahal will add another after the National Guard announcement. Dennis Reinbold says he will have a car at Indianapolis. But I think the car count at Indy is going to need to work to get to 33. " |

They should do an Indy Pure 100 on Saturday, with a full grid of experimental low-fuel vehicles.

a car like the 56th garage in Le Mans? What car should that be?
I hope that in the future there will be 40 or 50 cars back at Indy... |

Is 50 really feasable? I'd hate to think what the aftermath of a first lap accident would be. |

Are there 40 race-ready chassis in existence?

I think that would not be a problem. The problem is, that i fear there will no 33 cars on the grid in this year's Indy-500...

The problem is surely engine availability, not chassis. Honda & Chevy have only seemed willing to cover 17 engine leases each. Was it 2012 when drivers like Jay Howard & Pippa Mann had the budget, and a team like Michael Shank had a chassis, but Chevy and Honda wouldn't provide anymore engines, and no-one was willing to spend their money on a Lotus...
I know IMS is trying to 'balance the books' these days rather than spend freely, but they really should have guarded themselves against engine shortages by doing something along the lines of what the FIA did with the Cosworths in F1. If a team needed an engine (eg...Marussia/Virgin or HRT), they could buy one at a more affordable price and while not front-running, the engines weren't that far off and the teams could get on the grid. Why didn't IMS tip some money into the Judd engine program when Lotus quit to get it somewhere near the ballpark rather than 20mph off the pace, it might entice a smaller team to 'give it a go' and while they mightn't get an Indy pole but they wouldn't have been a mobile chicane and a smart and steady race could yield a decent result. CART racing survived on his type of scenario in the late 80s and early 90s (until 92 when Ford got serious), the bulk of the field had Cosworths but the winners were more often than not powered by the more dominant Chevy's. Chevy and Honda currently dictate the grid size, there should be the resources (ie..cars & engines) available to whoever wants to place an entry should they have the finance. Its ironic that 40 cars is considered a great entry these days, when in circa-93 some were calling for qualifying changes and a shortened month because there might only have been around 40 cars turning up... |

So the issue is why cant they get the finance to do a season? How much is an engine lease. Indy is the most expensive race of the year to do so are they starting at the wrong end of the stage... ? There is far more to this than just not having an engine lease. We want the Indy 500 to be a great event but some people in charge thought their inherited event was impregnable, that it was rock solid, and could never be overrun or torn down. That illusion has been seen to be a mistake. Any inheritance has to be managed and managed well, or decay and neglect will take its toll. It becomes dilapidated and eventually derelict. And when you come to repair the building then the cost of the restoration may be greater than building a new palace from scratch.... |

With Tagliani joining RSR full-time in the TUSCC, looks like he won't be doing any Indycar this year unless he gets a one-off at Indy or somewhere else

Andretti Autosport launches its team colours (this article and others on the Andretti Autosport website):
http://andrettiautosport.com/news/?p=3958#.UtWRXrR0nkc Blue and Yellow Snapple #25 for Marco Blue and White UFD #27 for Hinch DHL Yellow #28 as usual for RHR Green/white/gray Cinsay #34 for Munoz I'm thinking they should have thrown some white on the DHL car to make it a more consistent look across the team, but I understand why they didn't. |

I suppose DHL being the primary sponsor called the shots on the livery. |

There’s always TUSC. Actually, judging by the Daytona 24 entry list, a lot of full-time IndyCar drivers are getting some sports car seat time any ways. I count at least 10 at Daytona, and there may be more that I’ve overlooked.

Huertas will test for Panther.
So with Saavedra at Dragon for both Indy races we could have four Columbian IndyCar drivers next season! |
