Small Engined Special Saloons
Well folks,we've started to unravel some of the history regarding large engined special saloons/G.T'.So I'll start a new thread on the above subject which is one of my favorite,s in circuit racing.The first car needs no introductions at all! the famous Ginger Marshall Kitten powered by a front engined mini/imp hybrid.The second car,well "answers on a post card" is the phrase that springs to mind

I would think the 2nd photo is something to do with Ian Forrester as he raced the drambuie imp

The Ian Forrest Scirrocco. Front engined driving the rear wheels from memory and I think originally built by David Wragg. Think it had Davids MAE in in it.
Looks like Ian standing at the rear of the car talking to Jim MaGaughey in the white overalls and Ricky Gauld(?) in the blue. With Doug Niven's transporter in the background. So probably Ingliston. Last edited by Angus Theape; 18 Feb 2009 at 20:02. |

Spot on Angus! The scirocco was built on a Mallock chassis but most of the stiffness was lost during the construction of the car,throughout it's time in Scotland it ran with various engines 1500/1600 cc Ford type but it eventually "spontainiously combusted" in a garage and that was the end of it!
All in all,a very well thought out special saloon but sadly not that well engineered.Still looked quite good and was different! Last edited by stevie m; 18 Feb 2009 at 21:00. |

adrian hamilton had the scirroco for a while the car did end up with imp power

it is the same car 1 was steel shell crashed then rebuilt as space frame

One of the best one litre Special Saloon races I ever saw was at Snetterton, the Demon Doctor in Pig One v. Peter Jurgens' low-line A40, 997cc MAE with twin twin-choke downdraught Webers. Jurgens was much faster in practice, but couldn't pull away in the race, yet David couldn't get past him and make the maneouvre stick. No quarter given, and none asked, yet no banging, ramming, or nudging.
Eventually, the A40's engine went off-song, and DE won. Happy days.... Nowadays, you'd just have him off. |
