Beejay17 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Sandown Rd of '76 Sports Sedan Championship

Does anybody out there have an old RCN/Chequered Flag with a report of this race. I'm desperately after a copy. Any help appreciated.

Hrmmm, the best I can do is the results of the series:1976 Australian Sports Sedan Championship

Driver Car Points
Allan Moffat Capri Monza 33
Frank Gardner Chev. Corvair 27
Tony Edmondson Chrysler Charger 21
Jim Richards Ford Mustang 18
Ian Deffen Holden Torana 14
Ian Geoghegan Holden Monaro 8
Colin Bond Holden Torana 8
Brian Potts Holden Torana 7
Bob Jane Holden Monaro 6
Gary Rogers Ford Escort 5
Pat Crea Ford Cortina 4
Grant Walker Ford Capri 4
Vince Gregory VW Chevrolet 4
Bob Smith Holden Torana 3
Stuart Beechen Holden Torana 2
Peter Wells Vauxhall Viva 2
Ron Harrop Holden EH 2
John Pollard Chev. Camaro 2
Eddi Conacher Holden 1
Bruce Peacock Ford Anglia 1
Lyndon Arnel Holden Torana 1
Doug Clark Toyota Celica 1
Don Halliday Ford Capri 1

1976 Notes The above is taken from "Evan Green's World of Motor Sport" (1977)
Reference to other resources (Racing Car News Jan 1977, Chequered Flag June 1976 & A History of Australian Motor Sport (1980)) and Adelaide International Raceway Official Programme 22 Aug 1976, suggest that : Allan Moffat drove both a Chevrolet Monza and a Ford Capri RS3100, rather than a "Capri Monza"
"Ian Deffen" should actually be Ian Diffen
"Bob Smith" should actually be Brian Smith
The championship was decided over a seven round series, with rounds held at Surfers Paradise, Sandiwn, Oran Park, Wanneroo, Adelaide, Symmons Plains and Calder

The Monza was controvesial for its front chassis structure and for the first round at Surfers, Moffat qualified both the Monza and Capri. The Monza was approved and the Capri packed away and Moffat won. The second round of the championship was held at Sandown and Allan presented the car in a red, white and blue stars and stripes colour scheme to coincide with the American Bicentennial celebrations that weekend. It turned out to be one of the greatest races ever and the Monza was once more victorious, this time over Pete Geoghegan again and Colin Bond in the HDT ‘Beast’ Torana.

I have the race reports of all rounds in old RCNs, all except Sandown that is. So if anyone has it, I'd be grateful for a scan or photocopy. Similarly for the '79 Oran Park and '80 Sandown rounds. I've compiled a brief history of both the Monza and Capri if anyone is interested.

Thanks AMoffat, I've been watching, and some will know me from conrod.com.au forums

racer69 - over the past couple of years I've been going back and having a look at the Mustang, Capri and Monza. Only looking back do you realise what those cars represented. They were the peak of the Trans Am, ETCC and IMSA respectively. While everybody else built home-made specials (and very good ones at that) Allan was able to obtain top class vehicles from around the globe and bring them here.

As has been well publicised, the Mustang was brand-new straight out of Bud Moore's shop. Its sister cars won the Trans Am in '70.

The Capri was ex-Jochen Mass/Toine Hezemans Cologne factory car, flown out here after the Kyalami sports car race after Hans Heyer won the ETCC using a sister car. It was the ultimate production of the BMW/Ford wars.

The Monza was a rebuilt Dekon Engineering car which Allan raced in at a Daytona IMSA round before coming to Australia. Its sister cars went on to win the IMSA series.

Email me if you want more.

This sounds like it's getting worse than hoarding back issues of National Geographic...back issues of RCN <g> (Although I have to admit I have programs from every race meeting RaceTime has officiated at since 1985!)

One day I will have to go through and sort my programs out as well..a lot of them are simply photocopied editions (Winton Raceway for instance - in the early 90's used to produce their own programs..)

You sure? There was a big thing up here a while ago when they started popping up everywhere, that you'd buy fuel from there, then you could expect your car to cough and fart for a week or two...

But the bloke around the corner who knows someone that works for a subsidiary of a trucking company that sometimes hauls cocunut oil for a holding company owned by Shell, says the same thing about Shell!

Utter garbage - for a car to do that 'for a week or two' is indicative of something OTHER than fuel - bad fuel will only affect the car whilst the bad fuel is in the car.

The only time we don't use Woolworths/Safeway fuel here is when I am on the road and the town I am in doesn't have it and I am pretty sure I would know about that sort of problem.

*Any* fuel can periodically be contamintaed (just ask private pilots about that!!!!!

Sorry, should have said a week or two for the fuel to get through your car.

Agreed you can get dud fuel from anywhere, but luckily the local Shell and Mobil are always kept honest by the indepents, so there I normally wouldn't go near a Woolies.

What's the big petrol plant down in Melbourne in that has a petrol pump out the front? Ampol? Apparently the fuel out the front of the refinery is more expensive than the fuel from the plant which is transported up to Mt Isa... Go figure

Most likely it is at full retail price - no discounts.

Think you are kidding yourself, though, if you think Wollies fuel is any different to the fuel coming from Shell, BP, Caltex, Independants or whoever - there are only 2 (or is it 3??) refineries anyway....

Woolies fuel is imported from Singapore but a lot of independant servos use it it as well.
In Sydney you have Shell, Caltex and Singapore everyone gets their fuel from one of these three.
So people that use BP or Mobil or Woolworths or Liberty are using one of these three suppliers.

When ever i go to sydney i always fill up at the libert servo in the mountains, the petrol is usually about 10c cheaper than at home. I stopped there last sunday and they were getting a new load of fuel delivered, from a BP tanker.I have never had a problem with the petrol from there or at any other independant servo.

Wouldn't you know it, I got what I needed last Friday from the Marque Book Store new Hurstville. They were very helpful and I can't thank them enough. Months ago while in there I also found the old issue of RCN which had the Monza article you speak of and found a similar one for the Cosworth Capri.

But if I can trouble you for some other scans, that would be great!

If you think hoarding old mags is bad, how about buying the mags 25 years ago, hoarding them, tossing them out after you got moved house several times and got married, then going and tracking them down to buy them again second hand! D'oh!!
