Historic Sports Sedans

Now that sports sedans have been accepted as a catergory in Historics , what is going to come out of the garage , in the way of cars ?? .

I found out at the weekend that Thommo's VW has gone to god and been scraped.

Shame that.

He was racing his new toy at Calder over the weekend (VMRC) and told someone the shell was stuffed and at the time it would be near impossible to source the parts required to rebuild the car.

Interesting that at the Australian Institute for Motor Sport Safety Seminar some speakers said that the Historic movements obsession with "originality" was just plain dangerous and putting history over the needs of safety was just not on in this modern environment.
Personally if the original is either:
a: Destroyed or b: Just too old and outdated to be rebuilt safely then one "certified" replica built in the spirt of the original (like Gossy did with his Falcon) should be OK.
BTW re Thommos new toy the story about it and the interview he did on tonight's In Pit Lane will be up on the latest podcast by tomorrow lunchtime.

My theory to replace "Lost Cars" is this...

The Corvair! Last owner was Allan Grice. Allan Grice should have the right to build a replica. If he should choose not to, he could pass on authority to a person who would be willing to build the car.

Thommo's Torana Chev! Last owner was the Lusty Bros. They would have the right to build a replica. If they choose not to, they could pass on authority to a person who would be willing to build the car.

The issue of the "Authority" would be subject to an agreement between the last owner and interested person, this could involve financial consideration.

This proposal was part of my plans should the Historic Sports Sedan Register be controlled by the ASSA.

and if the current owners of cars such as Moffats Mustang and Janes Repco-Torana choose not to race the originals, then they should be able to build replicas to preserve their cars

I am talking about cars that are "lost"!

The Moffat Mustang, whilst ran in SS, was always an "Improved Tourer" that turned into a SS. You cannot have two cars!!!!!

The Jane Torana is an interesting case!

If the current owner (Willy) wanted to present the car as the original Jane Torana he would need a 4.4 Repco. If he wanted to present the car as Frank Gardner (chopped it up) raced it (still BJRT), it would have to run a 5Lt Chev, regardless, as the car still exists, nominate the year and present it as such, Ian Diffen etc, etc.

Harrop's EH, as the yellow 6 Cyl, BJRT Repco powered or the Wayne Mahnken 6 Cyl Turbo or the Stewie Douglas Turbo with the wing????? As the car still exists, nominate your configeration!

How many Corvairs were there?

Did it/they survive the Grice/Gardner split?

db120176 - Wasn't Ward's Monaro the ex-Bob Jane one?

Racer69, Ward's Monaro was the ex jane car, later run by Tino Leo..
There were 2 Corvairs to my knowledge, the Gardner/Grice version and the Les Swalllow 4 door version...

I'm sure Les Swallow still has the 4 door!

It is interesting to read that the acolades for the Corvair were all for Frank. While he did the job of finishing the car and punting it more than well, Henry Nebricki (spelling!) came up with the concept and started the construction! John Anderson actually finished off the car and Frank paid the bills. Ando is still in the US but does anyone know where Henry is?

There is a pic of the remains of the Bryan Thomson VW here.

http://members.tripod.com/motorsport...an_thomson.htm

I have to manually 'copy' and then 'paste' the web address on to your web browser address bar.
