Working limbs, blood pressure, urine, peripheral vision, colour vision, ability to read an eye chart and a subjective judgement about your psychological suitability -
About 10 minutes at walking pace. My doc took longer to find his rubber stamp and write his name. |

Surely Catch 22 would apply!
You're insane if you want to race, but if you're insane you can't have a licence. If you can't have a licence........... John |

Fees - trawl Google, big variation in fees charged. Didn't find what I was looking for I government guidance on what the typical GP should be charging for non-NHS (Private?) examinations. If the real cost of a GP's time really is £400-£600 no wonder the NHS is unaffordable.

my GP is very good so I don't really begrudge paying him to know I'm in good enough shape. he's also one of the CLub Doctors for BHA FC so he knows his onions. my old GP is married to a guy I race with so as I beat him in the last 2 races I won't ask her to 'fail' my medical

Crawley Clinic charged me £30 for the HGV medical last time, asked them about the Race licence medical at the time, and they saw no reason for that to be more expensive than an HGV one then. I do think it's worth contacting a local HGV school to find out who's doing all the medicals locally, as they are much more used to the processes involved and carry out the job as a routine, rather than a departure from normal general practice.

Just had my medical at my local docs at Bearsted Maidstone, took half an hour and he asked me how much I paid last year, and when I told him £ 95-00 at Paddock Wood docs, he said that was excessive and charged me £ 45-00

Blimey that must have restored your faith a bit, actually I think what you paid is quite acceptable but when it starts approaching a hundred quid it is no joke.

I've just booked mine at my local surgery, and they charge £50. They actually have "Race License Medical" on their price list, which I was surprised at. Can't imagine they get asked too often, unless west essex is a hotbed of racing and I just didn't know it.

Actually read my Blue Book today. Do I understand right - there's a grey bit around a sentence about having to have any medical counter-signed by your regular doctor? So you have to pay twice ;-)
Or did I read it wrong. Eyesight wasn't what it used to be............... |

MM,
E.2.9.1 says that before applying for their first licence (race of any discipline and International) they "must pass a Medical Examination by their General Practitioner". Applicants (for renewal, implied) over 45 year old must "pass an annual medical examination." No doubt asking our learned friends to interpret that would be giving them a benefit event, but you can make up your own mind! John |

E2.9.3 No ..... licence will be issued until the Medical Examination Report, if required, has been completed endorsed and signed by the applicant's GP
(My italics) Now I read that to mean that it must be your own GP - no matter what the price - and not a mate set up at the Club's dinner dance. Thoughts? |

I guess that ther's nothing to stop you having more than one regular GP.
One for MSA medicals and one for coughs and sneezes? |

I don't know how they'd check, unless they request medical records? I transferred to my local surgery last week, so the guy who did my medical has just become my "regular GP" even tho I've never seen him before (he still ticked the "regular GP" box of his own volition, and made a note i'd just moved there). I also have a GP provided by work, tho being in London I avoided him as I don't have a platinum amex.
I haven't been to the same surgery two visits running for a long time, due to re-locating fairly often in the last few years, so haven't had a regular GP since I was 14. I'm assuming the regular GP part is due to the diabetic / epileptic declarations - the medic should know your full history to assess that. |

I've never had my GP do my medical, he won't do them so I have to go elsewhere.

Mine has cost me anything between £90-100 over the last 5 years. As an old git, I am stuffed and have to have one every year. Seems like the doctor's practices are getting wind of this and seem to form a cartel locally. A ring round showed that they all charge the same! now that was a surprise! Some doctors really do not understand what a race medical is all about. My doctor is a "diamond" but still stings me the full whack! At least I feel like I am getting my money's worth. The shortest medicals have been with non-white doctors. Seems to be a touch of "yes, you've got arms, legs, eyes, u'll do! Now pay at the desk and clear off" Am I just an old cynic or what?

Actually I had my last one with an Asian guy and I have to say he gave me a very through medical, much longer than my previous doctor. I (almost) felt like I was getting value for money. This is what does pee me off a bit though, I am also an old git and about a year or so ago rung the doctor and asked if I could have a medical checkup, unrelated to racing but felt as I had reached the ripe old age of 56 it would be a good idea to get a bit of preventitive attention, I mean the women get them no problem with their breast scans and cervic smears but oh no. I was informed that this type of service is was not available on the NHS or at least at that practice so if that is the case maybe it is just as well if I have the medical even if I have to pay as it is the only way I would get it!

I don't mind paying for it becauase an annual check up is a good thing anyway. But as I posted a while ago I got my full medical for International licence for free this time around. Still had to get the form filled in by my GP and he ran the GP tests too so I paid whatever he charges (don't recall the sum).

they don't; went down for something else and happened to mention blood pouring out of my backside on regular occassions. To give the GP his due, she had me straight to a specialist. can't knock the NHS for that.
Had a lady doctor make me take my pants off, for a race medical, and grabbed my bits with her latex gloved hand! gave me a shock; had 3 more race medicals that year, as a result!!! |
