Ferrari/ Marlboro situation

Hey, this might have been said before, but I hearda rumour that Ferrari were just thinking of keeping the white triangle on their car, but not the name Marlboro... because people associate the triangle with Marlboro cigarettes. Seems like a bit of a loophole in the rules..

anyone know if this would be allowed?

Yes I think this is allowed for Italian company. It's quite a less than reputable activity isn't it though ?

Apparently the more "stringent" interpretation applies to British companies only.

One wonders if BAR might also consider the red circle on a white background - the Rising Sun, for their Japanese partners, of course! - for a consideration from British-American Tobacco.

personally i dont get whats going on with this rule/law as jordan is still running the BE--ON----EDGE- on their cars and they are a uk company. its all very confusing!

I don't understand that BAR still have the BAT logo on the side of the car as well - surely if advertising cigarettes isn't allowed you can't advertise the company?!

Don't like smoking at all... hence i won't mind seeing those tobacco sponsors out of F1.

But if they want to pump in the money, and not the logos...why not?

It doesn't matter anyway...watching F1 for more than 10 years..never did those stickers make me want to pick up smoking.

Saw some pictures of today's testsession and what amazed me was the Ferrari with big MARLBORO logo's.
McLaren and Renault were driving with non-tobacco livery.

Anyone got any idea if this was allowed?

Regarding BAR and BAT, surely BAT isn't actually a brand of cigarettes, just the manufacturer (Lucky Strike being one of their products) so BAR are not promoting smoking by running with their logos on the cars.

Presumably it would be the same if a team decided to paint "Philip Morris" on the side of the cars.

Personally, I don't see why, if F1 is such a breeding ground for new smokers, why we haven't seen the likes of Team Nicorette yet. Surely the PC mob couldn't argue with that.

Ferrari aren't a British-based team. All the British-based teams are subject to these stringent new laws as of 1/8/05 which were brought in by the UK Parliament.

and they wont be able to afford F1.

But Lucky Strike is a brand of cigarettes, and BAR run with 'Lucky Strike' logos on their cars, not 'British-American Tobacco' logos.

The law covers televised events, as I understand it, and the testing sessions are not televised as far as I know.

Ok I was basing my comment on an earlier post who said BAR were running with BATs logo.

Erm, as for as I know, Philip Morris (Marlboro) has agreed to stay on at Ferrari using a form of subliminal advertising by displaying "Smoking Kills" logos, while the car is red and white. Oh joy. Either that, or Vodafone will give more funding.

Considering this was supposed to be comprehensive legislation, it doesn't seem to have made much difference. You can still tell that the cars are advertising tobacco brands if you've watched more than 2 races.
