"Was there a race yesterday?" Race 10 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship

It was a long day trackside or by the TV for two motor races, but we should be grateful for small blessings at this time.

Did the mix of hard and soft tyres work?

I thought racing was good.

Quali today (SUnday) was even more interesting.

The traction control shares a dodgy earth with the headlights.

So silly of Penske/T8 to waste seats on slow, expensive "name" drivers - they've overlooked an absolute powerhouse in Nick Percat! Next stop Indycar? Perhaps even F1?

I did. Good racing with an interesting mix of runners up front.

I thought it was great to watch. Good to see them mixing it up with the tyres etc to give some interest to all three races. Too much chance of all three being processions with the same results otherwise and the chance for wins for "lesser" teams is great for the sponsors in these hard times.

All of the above here as well.
Loved the fact we saw rare and new winners, new polesetters and also podium 'virgins'. Quite a refreshing change from the norm.

When was the last time in recent years that we had neither an RBR or DJRTP car in the top 6 of a race? If ever.

Quite good racing, the tyre situation needs some tweaking, maybe get rid of the shootout so that where you qualify is where you start.

The two most professional, well funded, well run teams with arguably the 3 best drivers in the series with the fourth being a top ten driver....hmmm...

Seeing drivers run around many seconds off the pace tto preserve tyres is not great racing though

Shootout is for fighting hard for pole, not for preserving the tyres. I think Shootout should be for Top 10 drivers and all should go on the same tyre.

I want to say it was a great week-end's racing. The tyre management made it interesting. In truth, tyres aside, there was little real racing despite some close finishes. I found it fairly stale and that makes me sad. It's mostly a procession except some people make the right guess on tyres and find themselves with extra grip when it counts.

Is it the right guess though? The teams appeared to fall into two categories.
Those who were genuine about winning the round and scoring as many championship points as possible.
Those who sacrificed one or two of the races in order to achieve a result in the third.
For me the whole thing had a bit of a stink of artificiality about it. A win is a win but some of the winners arent really beating the rest of the field, just the rest of those on the same tyre strategy.

The difference between the last meeting and this one was night and day.The first one allowed for tyre strategy that allowed cars to stay reasonably competitive across 3 races. This one made that impossible and by the 3rd race it was a consolation race for people that didn’t try to race before that.If those randomised results appeal to you I suggest watching the reels on poker machines turn for entertainment. The Supercars demographic will no doubt hail it as a great success and the way of the future.

We’ve been told for twenty years that the future of the sport is everybody getting their time in the sun, not the deserving drivers and teams winning the races

You fellows are right on the money. Some of the comments on speedcafe about it being the most exciting round ever with new winners is just garbage. To say it is not unfair because everyone gets the same tyres is missing the point.
Red Bull and Penske have to compromise all through to get an overall result for a title chase.
Others can sacrifice 1 or 2 races & dog it in qualifying( when they would be midfield runners anyway) just to appear the hero on television when they win in prime time in their chosen race and make the title contenders look like also rans.
Supposedly great for the fans and the sponsors who have stuck by the sport but hardly true motorsport.
The fact that Smith, Jacobsen & Jones were front runners at times suggests they have real pace, which they dont have on a level playing field.
A nice try but not the way to go.

"True" motorsport with cars that have aero wash issues is as dull as dishwater to the average punter. "True" motorsport fans might get excited about seeing the same result over and over with cars not able to overtake but there aren't enough of them to pay the bills. It has to appeal to the average joe who has got plenty of choice of other things to do and watch over a weekend.

Now in the ideal world the cars wouldn't have aero issues. Every team could afford to put the best drivers available regardless of budget in their cars etc and everyone would be happy but no series has managed that yet to my knowledge.

If Penske are compromised through all three races then 888 are doing a shocking job....
