All this talk of debris reminded me of earlier in the race. What happened to the bit of tree that caused Leclerc and Verstappen to cut the corner in the early laps and ultimately led to Hamilton getting the lead.
Was it cleared away by marshals or did someone run over it and push it out of the way?

Do you remember back in the day we didn’t used to get punctures in races? Those were goodyears?

(seen this joke a lot so don’t know who to credit)

Casper should be qualifying in the top 5 on the gridCasper should be qualifying in the top 5 on the grid
An interesting result all round that livened things up a bit. To add more interest what is needed is for a new winner to appear for the next few races and the main protaginists to finish a few places down and that will throw the cat amongst the pigeons properly. Someone like Vettel or LeClerc winning would be awesome and lets see who spits the dummy then. I live in hope.

has there been any word on the amount of damage to MV's car?

after Bottas' collision with Russell, Toto suggested that the cost of repairs could impact the amount of budget left for late season upgrades...of which few were ever planned anyways because of the budget cap plus next years rules change.

if one assumes access to more money makes a team more competitive, then likewise any accident/damage which costs money to fix could make a team less competitive later on in the season.

another facet to this is PU usage. Merc introduced a fresh unit for Baku (im assuming because it needed to maximize power on one of the longest straights on the calendar), but LH finishing outside of the points means that decision has not paid off and there will now have to be trade off somewhere later on in the season.

RB, on the other hand i believe, did not use (and waste) a fresh unit here. this may speak to the confidence Honda have in their reliability this year?

before i go too far down the rabbit hole of random thoughts, despite there not being a change in points between the two WDC leaders, RB still may be walking away with a big operational advantage over Merc.

anyways, this is very much shaping up to be a very goodyear!

It has been pointed out that we currently know the following:

Both cars was a rapid deflation of the left rear, the highest wear is on the right-rear.
Both cars suffered a tyre deflation at the same part of the track - so if something on the track caused the issue, it was in the same place.
Hamilton's (left-rear) tyre had a 6-7cm cut on the inside shoulder when they removed it under the red flag.

Until the full details are known - it was right to throw the red flag and let everyone put on new tyres. Until the tyres are fully inspected, we don't know if it was wear related or debris related.

Tyres were a similar age, and failed on the same part of the track. Both of these facts could be coincidence, or evidence of cause.
It's a shame the Verstappens (Snr and Jnr) were not as balanced in their comments. Preliminary evidence suggests debris damage, so cheap jibes are really unhelpful in advance of a full investigation.

If it turns out that debris was the cause (or likely cause) there will be two new questions to be addressed:
1. How to keep the track free of debris
2. How to make the tyres more debris-resistant
