generally, the taster day will be along these lines :-

arrive and sign on at paddock bar (after the main marshal sign on session!)
introduction chat about marshals / clubs / MSA and grades
basic safety guidelines
visit Brooklands to see Rescue wagon / medics
look / chat with Assembly
up to Race Control - see control room & visit timekeepers
discuss senior duties - clerks etc
walk to Scrutineering bay for chat about their work
through the tunnel to copse outside - discuss & play with flags (away from track)
visit copse IO to discuss Incident duties - maybe run across the gravel bed with a fire bottle if no racing in progress
pop up to see Post Chief and understand their duties
walk back along bank to flag point - nice and close to the cars!
back through the tunnel and up to the Pits office for chat about their work
across to Med centre for a guided tour (plus a reminder about how to avoid being a "customer") - not always possible if they have patients to deal with.

After that, you get to choose - clear off home exhausted / stay and watch / get out and spend the rest of the day with the orange / black army.

Arrive about 0800 (earlier to have breakfast)
Finish about 1200-1300
Afternoon session typically ends about 1800 - taster day folk might want to leave part way through, but normal race meetings expect to stay to the finish please.

Make sure you have decent footwear / gloves / waterproofs (orange good, red / yellow bad!) / hat / sunscreen
Bring more food & drink than you expect to need.

Blimey, no wonder I get worn out helping with these!

Have you been given a date yet?

If you can, do the afternoon session on post. Nothing quite like being out there to find out what it's about.

Only if you're a good girl and wear a trainee tabard - and you'd better be impressive with that bottle across the gravel I wish they'd had these days when I started as they really do help you to hit the ground running.

Of course, if you're offering to help take one round .....

That's not always a good thing to do - I've tried it. Fortunately there weren't too many spectators around to see it!

I've tried it - unfortunately there was a video camera pointed straight at me!

You'll be spoilt for choice on the 22nd because the BRSCC & HSCC are both running meetings on the North & South Circuits at the same time.

Thanks Chris, we will take you up on that if possible; I guess we will be in Race Control around 9:30 or 10. Provided that you are not too busy with "early session sinners" we will come and find you.

22nd sounds like a great day to have picked. How hard is this running across gravel with a fire bottle?

Does anyone now what the next step is after the taster day?

Many thanks all,

Stuart

Oh yes, sign away your weekends every week for the rest of your life

Given you're a fellow local, I'd suggest you sign up for the 750MC Birkett Relay on Sat 29th - should be plenty to do and the biggest variety of cars you'll see for a long time.

also, Sat 5th & Sun 6th for the HSCC Walter Hayes Trophy

Then things go a bit quiet locally - look out for Training days in the New Year.

Taster Days

We had an Attentive group visit my Post at Brooklands on Saturday BTCC practice.

Both myself and the I/O gave the group an insight into being a Marshal.

We had a good response.........with some sensible answers to their questions.

Hi Stuart, I will chat about "next steps" towards the end of the taster session, and provide a few websites to look at (including this one of course!). Basically you can volunteer to any meeting at any time - you don't need to get overalls first, or join a club, just find out what's on where and who to contact - I will explain how to find this out.

See you on Saturday.

Gerry

Hi Stuart. I did my taster day @ the MG meeting in the summer with Gerry & Dave Hairy. Both my wife & I had a fantastic day, and i've been back marshalling 9 times since. Absolutely the best thing i've done in years.
You'll love it

Well, rain looks less likely than typical for this time of year, but waterproofs often appear for the last hour or two to keep us warm and protect from the wind as the sun goes down - after all this is an old (exposed) airfield!
