happens reasonably often in national motorsport, though in the uk the barriers are normally secured with whacking great big wooden posts and absorb the impact differently to whatever type of ground they had those chicken wire posts nailed into...

Raikkonen, Silverstone, 2014 springs to mind immediately.

It happens far more frequently than you might think, but F1 cars don't often hit bare Armco at speed and the right angle on TV so it looks unusual when they do.

He bounced off the Armco, he didn't go through it, which is what happened to Grosjean.

Helmuth Koinigg died punching through an armco barrier back in 1974. Old version of armco, yes, but the basic design remains the same (the biggest difference being modern armco having three layers as opposed to two back in the old days).

In more modern days we've seen cars punch through the armco barriers at Le Mans. The cars usually bounced back out onto the track, however, but they punched a hole nonetheless.

Grosjean's crash is an extreme example though.

There was Cevert in '73 at Watkins Glen but safety has moved on since then.

Maybe they have at Le Mans but as you say the car has bounced back, Grosjean went straight through.
