Isn't Montoya on the softer compound? Why is he slower than Ralf/Alonso?

Yes. Not taking anything from Monty but he seemed to be in trouble before his gearbox let go. Button was gaining quite quickly. So either it was a forunner of the geartbox problem or his tyres.
However as demonstrated by Sato and Ralf. The BAR definitely had better grip than the Williams' in the slower corners. |

I'm not belittling his performance due to my bias towards Button, I like Sato too. I especially liked his maturity regarding the Ralf episode, and his respect when overtaking DC. If Fernando qualified a bit better he would probably be third in the standings.
