Johnnie Walker to replace West at McLaren? (update)

Just been reading on www.f1-live.com and it appears as though Johnny Walker will replace West as title sponsor at McLaren next year. The deal is believed to be worth 36 million pounds a year. Would be interesting to see that livery.
Any thoughts??

Very appropriate slogan as the McLaren drivers did a lot of walking this year.
Sorry couldn't help it

Doesn't the rulebook forbid a team from running different liveries? Does that include color-scheme, even if everything else is identical? Then they could run a Johnny Walker Red and a Johnny Walker Black.

I can't remember the souce so it could be garbage but I read somewhere that Merc will only let the cars be black & silver so any sponsers have to live within that so it makes sense they would use black especially as F1 is a "premium" sport & that is a higher quality product.

McLaren are known for being quite picky with sponsors. They have to 'fit' with the other sponsors, which keeps eveyone happy. I think Johnny Walker will be able to do that.

Enjoying the sponsors product after a race, would me much more enjoyable with Johnny Walker, rather than a few drags of a West cigarette

Good that another team is weaning itself off tobacco sponsorship.

And, on a very minor note, it is Johnnie Walker, not Johnny.

I suspect alcohol advertising will get a similar EU crackdown to tobacco within a decade, but it's still a good medium-term solution for McLaren, especially as I doubt Ron Dennis will still be involved by then. As noted above, Ron Walker who was the last team owner to win a race with a car built for anotehr team was an heir to the business, so he may've convinced the company to pursue F1 for sponsorship.

Rob Walker, I think you mean. Isn't Ron Walker the chappie who runs the Melbourne GP?

Yes he is.

Probably just a typo from Boots.

Anyway it'll be good to have another strong company like Diageo in F1.

I'm actually surprised at how little that title sponsor deal is worth. I know that sounds strange, but McLaren are spending ~$300M per year and that's only ~$70M.

Boots, that was Rob Walker, whose Lotus 49 at the hands of Seppi Siffert won the British GP in 1968. He later latched onto John Surtees Team. He also wrote Grand Prix reports for Road & Track in the States, the entree to F1 for many an American in the 70's.

Mr Waker, is now saddly, deceased.

how many f1 teams does that leave with tobacco money, is it just ferrari, bar and renault, or do jordan still get money from b & h. good to see more teams getting away from fag advertising.

And alcohol is better how exactly? You dont get pulled up by Mr Plod on a Saturday night to see if you have had one Marlboro or two....

Interesting to see this company in F1... although what it does to Warsteiner isnt totally clear...

i don't see why a legally purchasable product shouldn't be allowed to be advertised, but a lot of people dislike smoking, and for f1 to continue to take money from tobacco companies doesn't reflect well on the sport i believe.

Bizarre that a scotch brand would pay such big numbers on what is a very small demographic amongst the TV viewers

The whisky industry is trying very hard to pitch to a younger demographic than it has just now though.

They see young spirit drinkers tend to opt for Vodka.
