Team Delta were asked to check over a competitor car . We found the hand brake dragging . Sorted and the young lad had a great race . BTW as we were finished by midday Sunday I had a wonder around . Did not realise there is so much going on outside . Looks like so many people having fun , dancing and listening to the 50’s and 60’s music . Such joy to see people so happy . So question , why is it this period is just so popular and people want to go back in time and pretend to be back in this post war period .

HW was right, and those of you old enough can vouch for it. Society has changed immeasurably since, for the better, and now, for a lot of people, seemingly, for the worse.

I think the 60's generally was a time of,optimism, regeneration and growth, so anyone forward thinking or productive should have prospered, many did.

A hard act to follow realistically, eSpecially musically!

So true, Joe. After two world wars in 30 years and skirmishes in Korea and Suez the public were ready for a period of peace and although nuclear war was a worry it seemed that as both sides would anhialate each other a wary stand-off would be the default status (not that we knew that term then).
I think optimism and regeneration started in the 50s but the big difference between then and life after the millenium is the increase in disposable income throughout all stratas of society. I was brought up in a middle class family and have probably stayed at that level my whole life but there are huge differences in the way I have lived then and now. Then we bought (or had bought, as I was a child) clothes, food, entertainment at far more modest levels than today. There was little waste as most folks couldn't afford it.
This isn't a look through rose tinted specs as much has got better such as health care (life expectancy), working hours, education opportunity, environment concern, etc. but the gap between the haves and the have nots has widened and will have to be addressed at some stage.
I think that I am lucky to have lived through the best generation in the areas that interest me most - motor sport, music and work.

Yes, there were lots of things to be said for the 60's including the beginnings of real technological innovation in all things. The Mini was a good example but commercial flights and other transport systems made life better for many. It was when ordinary folks started going to Spain and France for holidays.

As to now? I saw a report in the news that a woman has complained that the new large Iphone is too big for normal female hands and is thus anti feminist. Two things there; 1, she can buy another type of phone; and 2, the media actually reported as a serious piece!

I despair.

So true. Looking at the world now makes me realise what a privilege it was to have been growing up through the 50s and 60s!

I agree the sixties were great, racing cars were great, formula junior in particular,i do find some things about the show at the revival a little strange,i cant imagine a U-boat commander spectating at a meeting, also what the hell is steam-punk about? On the subject of tyres some of our competitors moan about the EU made tyres, dont know if this is valid, the tyres are a tradition after all!

Whilst the dressing up has got a bit out of hand, it does serve to get people involved and adds to the whole party atmosphere. So, not really a bad thing.

I don't know about the good old days but I can remember having to take a ration book to get a quarter of sweets, and I didn't see a banana until 1954

An orange for Christmas was not a joke in the 1940's it was for real.

Do you remember sweets coming of the ration Gordon? We all rushed round to Jim Borees sweet shop to pig out on all manner of things.
Not a day one can forget even 70 years on.

Sweet rationing stopped in 1953 and all rationing finished with bacon being the last in 1954

A big mistake of course.

Just as the NHS was getting on its feet, so to speak, the government of the day inadvertently introduces today's obesity crisis!

Ok I understand all this . But hang on most of the people enjoying Goodwood were youngsters . How would they know about sweet rationing .

Through the media.

All part of what they are taught about "austerity" and who to blame for it.

Or the alternative answer is ...

They don't and therefore have no idea that sweet things are making them obese.
On the other hand as people are finally admitting that future generations are (mostly) unlikely to be able to ever retire (therefore probably a good thing that life expectancy is starting to fall?) enjoying life to excess in all things (including sweets) and not expecting a right to risk free eternal life might be a sensible option.

In which case I suppose the question of whether or not Goodwood is an accurate facsimile of history or not may simply become an opportunity to split the concept into two parts and give each part a different focus.

Maybe they could get the VSCC to help set up some Handicap races? A somewhat period correct race format surely?

Surely it's apt that both on- and off-track activities are pastiches? Do you think there are classic clothing forums bemoaning the effect modern fabric development has on 1940s design?

Funnily enough the history lessons don't show the benefits of austerity, but that could be because they can't find any.

When the (ex?)missus had to teach the youngsters about healthy eating and the school changed its policy on what they were allowed to bring for meals/snacks it turned out that very few had to change their diets, most the parents were already well aware of what was good for their offspring. It was a much bigger issue for the staff!
Of course the demographic of the parents who's kids attend a very expensive school might be different to that which has an obesity problem.

Apart from the handicap races that filled Goodwood timetables they also had women's races, presumably such an event would be deemed sexist these days?

That's the trouble with you kids young Iain, no idea of true hardship!
You probably think not being able to buy a croissant on the cross channel ferry on your way to race someone else's historic car at Spa, is hardship.

When I was a kid we never knew where the next potato was coming from, and I had to darn my own socks.

Central heating was a strong peppermint ………………….. if you had enough ration coupons.
