skmanuk should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Formula Renault BARC

Hi

Anyone know who's entering this year, I know a number of TOCA Renault teams have suggested they may run additional cars in the Formula Renault BARC.
Also any definite B class runners yet?

Simon,
Have a look on the renault sport web site, there are 3 pre 2000s confirmed, 2 are totally new competitors & then you've got blossy so that will make four. I'm still unsure of what to do, currently doing the calculations to see how many sacks of king edwards i'd need to take for a ride to bring myself up to mono weight limit. Mono allowing 90 plus Kg for a driver is almost discrimination against fit & healthy people, people should be encouraged to keep light & fit to make themselves quicker, I suppose it is just the gentlemanly nature of the series.

I'll definately be out in something, depends what looks best in a few weeks time

I thought Martin Bloss was selling his car and moving up to a post 2000 car. Ian I am sure that you will enjoy yourself in mono - big grids and a friendly bunch. I suspect that you will be a bit down on power with the 8v engine. Dermot Healy has got a 16v clio unit for sale at £350 which I would think would be a fairly straightforward engineering job to fit.
Dont forget that the F Renault is also eligble for class A of the F4 championship and there are no min weight limits for drivers. There will be at least 3 F Renaults out in that championship.

Out of interest - has anyone tried to fit a Zetec motor to a Renault chassis for Mono 2000???

Don't think I have ever seen one on the mono grid. I don't know for sure, but its probably too much hassle. It would be cheaper, (and probably a quicker car) to put a 2L Zetec in a FF1800 chassis, fit F3 wheels, some wings, and underbody aero kit (basicly a Comtec car).

How much power is a 16v Renault unit? Would it compare to a Vauxhall XE, Toyota, VW or Ford Zetec? Could you perhaps just change the head, induction and ignition on the 8v unit that is in a F Renault and still conform to the mono regs?

The clio 2.0L 172 Sport clio engine is 172BHP and the new 182 Sport is 182BHP would guess you could pick up a 172 engine easily and get 200BHP from it quite cheaply (not sure what the rules are in mono & F4). It has to be lighter than the Zetec engine but I guess about the same power (The Focus 170 was 2.0L 170BHP I think).

Jeremy I think a FRenault with a clio 2L motor in it would be quick and cheap

What do the current FRenault cars run?

The mono rules are that it has to be a 2L Iron block engine, standard internals, besides uprated big end bolts. Induction has to be Carbs or standard injection. Exhaust is free.

Are the latest Renault units Iron block?

Fairly sure that the latest F Renault use a 2L 16V unit. Not sure which one though.

Ah and no VVT which I guess the 172 and 182 engines are. What was the engine in a Clio Williams?

the renault 16v engine dermot has is an iron block, i know this because before i bought the toms dermot could of easily talked me into sticking that engine in a nice fr, i think it could be a good idea and would like to see 1!

think the later renault engines do have vvt / alloy block and aren't allowed.

As I remember the Clio Williams has an iron block but the later F Renault cars have alloy blocks hence not allowed in Mono. I would imagine that you would be getting about 200bhp from a clio williams engine once it had been blueprinted/ram air box fitted etc and whatever mods are allowed in mono.

probably a winner then, as the later pre carbon FR chassis are very nice, like a space frame F3 car. They have done well in mono with 8v engines in the right hands. One with a 16v engine circa 200BHP should be quick, cheaper than F3 cars as well!

How do the FR cars run with the increased ground clearance?

It is right to say that they are not as quick running at 40mm, but it is a level playing field because all the F3 cars etc run at 40mm too. I know from putting a well know driver coach in my Tatuus that they are about 1.5 seconds slower when at 40mm. But in Mono you can run much grippier tyres, there is no air restrictor, free exhaust, no cat etc.
I would imagine with a 16v clio engine and in the right hands this would be a very good car to have in mono.

Does anybody know what the real 0 - 100mph time for a pre 2000 F Renault is. On the BARC site they quote 0 - 100mph in under 5 seconds, but having just read the autosport article about the A1GP car it quote 5.5 seconds for this 520bhp car, surely a F Renault can be nowhere near as quick.

You're right and the FR2000 is quoted at 4.8s to 100mph. I would have thought that both those figures were a bit optimistic?

EDITED: I was replying to the earlier postabout pre 2000 Fr, not the last one!

There was another one actually, it's on my site. A bright green 2003 spec car, can't remember what the team was called. Somebody with the surname "Metcalfe".

Would that be Jeremy Metcalfe from Fleet, running in a Welch Motorsort (also fleet) car?

Not surprisingly, none of our data for the Tatuus shows this sort of time! However, I would think a 0 - 60 of around 5 seconds would be reasonable given the power and weight.

If someone was racing in BARC with a car capable of 0 - 100 in less than 5 seconds I think a lot of people would be reaching for the protest fee.....
