A confusing comment from A1GP Team Japan (Carlin) team manager Malcolm Swetnam, explaining why they and Hayanari Shimoda aren't in Durban:

Quote:
“Our deal with Hayanari was only for three races and he and his family honoured that at Dubai in December,” explained team manager Malcolm Swetnam. “As there’s no other driver lined-up to replace Hayanari, we, Carlin Motorsport, will no longer be involved with A1 Team Japan as it’s too expensive to fly our mechanics out to a race in the hope of a driver coming up with the money. We may well be involved with Hayanari again later this year, though, as his run in A1GP fired him up to race single-seaters again and he’s looking at racing in GP2 or possibly with us in the World Series by Renault.
But Carlin themselves have already confirmed Fleming and Aleshin... So what does this mean? And doesn't that also suggest Carlin still hope to be in GP2?

Isn't Aleshin part of the Red Bull Junior line up, like Fleming? Both for Carlin would make sence.

AFAIK, Red Bull is paying the (high) bills at Carlin, just like they have made with Jenzer last year.

Jérôme d’Ambrosio's manager Vincenzo Sospiri is in talks with KTR and Epsilon.
So we could see him end up at Epsilon.

Valsecchi and d'Ambrosio? Would that be a line-up strong enough for defending champions?

Ok guys, time is ticking by and the pre season tests are getting nearer, how many drives can we confirm and how many do you think are going to end up in shoot outs at said tests?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only confirmed drivers I know of are:

Carlin - Colin Fleming, Mikhail Aleshin
Cram - Ben Hanley, Milos Pavlovic
Draco - Pastor Maldonado, Tomas Kostka
Jenzer - Alvaro Barba
Pons - James Rossiter, Celso Miguez
Prema - Greg Franchi
RC Motorsport - Giovanni Tedeschi

Leaving the following 19 seats available:

Comtec - 2 (I read today that Stoddart has parted company with the team)
Epsilon Euskadi - 2
Eurointernational - 2
GD Racing - 2
Interwetten.com Racing - 2
Jenzer Motorsport - 1
KTR - 2
Prema Powerteam - 1
RC Motorsport - 1
Saulnier Racing - 2
Victory Engineering - 2

I'm surprised there aren't more confirmed drivers by now, especially in comparison to GP2. I guess now that the GP2 grid is all but finalised a lot more deals will fall into place.

Kurt Mollekens of KTR already said he was planning to sign his 2 drivers by the beginning of February. But with several drivers with GP2-budget not making it there he is waiting for those to 'get in touch' with WSR-teams instead of signing someone with less budget.

With GP2 settled now I think we'll see some announcements soon.

yes, it is strange that ktr has no drivers signed until now. They had a good track record last season.

Not strange at all. Why sign drivers early when you can get even better drivers that have missed out on the GP2/F1-boat
