Question for our Australian members..... I’ve been looking at the race categories at the Bathurst 6hr next w/end. I presume the ‘Heritage Touring Car’ race is for original period cars, while the ‘Improved Production’ category caters for cars without any period history, and modern stuff?

Heritage Touring Cars are cars from the Group C and Group A era. (Group C were from 1973 to 1984, and Group A ran in Aus from 1985 to 1992 when the V8SC began). It effectively caters for the period after Traditional Historic Touring cars.

More about them here: http://www.heritagetouringcars.com.au/about-us/

Improved Production are as you say for more modern cars and generally cars that did not run under Group C and A, and allow for modifications beyond homologated for Production racing. ie you can run any engine from the same manufacturer. (ie a larger Rotary in an early Mazda) . Best summary is on their website.
http://ipraaus.com.au/

This probably explains the regs and indicates what you can / cant do
http://ipraaus.com.au/about-ipra-australia/

It is a great category. Watch out for Jordan Cox. He has done some mighty stuff in the category although I see he has changed his car now (He used to run a Honda) He seems to get passed on the straights but then pulls some stunning passes in unlikely places to get even.

A couple of short clips.

My views on electric cars are now changed. It was brilliant. 700NM of torque instantly available and it handled like a dream. Talk about quick. Blink and you are already doing 120 kph! 0-100kph in well under 5 secs! The roads chosen were all country roads so plenty of twists and turns. I think they are great looking too, for an SUV type thing.

Purely by chance this article appeared in my phone's news feed today

https://www.autonews.com/suppliers/j...touch-saab-dna

Apparently the electric motors in the iPace are the result of continued development of the system SAAB was presenting to the world just before they finally fell foul of the aftermath of the GM years.

Well well. What might have been ... I wondered why NEVS had introduced an electric version of the 9-3 as its new vehicle.

Thanks for that, E.B. Are all the ‘Heritage’ cars genuine period racers, or are there some modern builds included? Is it CAMS that insist on ‘real’ cars only?

All are genuine period racers in that category Mike. That is my understanding. Certainly most owners I know talk of their cars history. David Towe (a member at tenths) would be the guy to ask as he runs a JPS M3 from the Frank Gardner stable. He is actually the current Heritage TC Champion.I spoke to him at PI and have met him at previous meetings. He did say he does not get on here much these days.

I understand genuine period history is a prerequisite of the CAMS regulations that allow them to be classified with a CAMS Historic log book. (In the same way that the Touring Car Masters category are all pretty well modern builds and are technically not running as Historic cars. CAMS would not issue logbooks to them as Historics. I believe they had to originally be logbooked as Sports Sedans but that may have now changed)

Just found this confirming my thoughts re the Heritage csrs, from the depths of the Heritage web site page (link) I posted

Quote:
These regulations ensure that the Heritage Touring Cars that you see racing on the track today are the bona fide original racing cars that competed in the era of 1973 – 1992, now back in their period correct livery and mechanical specification. Replicas are not permitted under the CAMS regulations.

The annual Championship is administered by the Group C Touring Car Association Limited (the Association), a not-for-profit limited company that represents the owners and fans of Heritage Touring Cars across Australia.
Which reminds me... time to switch the telly on.... Touring Car Masters are down to race this morning at the PI V8 Supercars meeting. Yesterdays race 2 was a cracker. Race 1 ended unfortunately with a 1st lap red flag, and barrier repairs taking toolong for it to be restarted. Fortunately only fsmsge was cars and barriers. Drivers all ok.

Yes Jordan Cox is in the red Honda Civic. Actually his Dad, Graham Cox also races in the category or did. I reckon Jordan could be a star for the future in Touring Cars. AFAIK Jordan builds and does all the work on the car himself. His problem is more the money it needs now to get a break in the bigger categories.

I dont know if its a good thing to show how many good cars and people you have there. Pleasure, fun, joy, serious racers and relaxed ambiance shouldn't be displayed like that. Its obscene! There is a risk to bring attention on all this. One day or another a guy wearing a white shirt showing lot of patches will come and grab the mike saying: "Halloooo, shut up jerks, this is the FUC speaking… "

Thanks also for the CAMS info, which confirms what I thought. So a Gp2 Escort like mine (and most others in Europe) built to homologated 1970s spec but in a later period would race with more modern stuff?

I see CAMS point, and if there’s enough genuine cars out there (which there seem to be), it will work. Over here, less likely. One argument I’ve never agreed with, though, is that drivers of replicas will be less responsible on track. It takes just the same money to repair, regardless of age.....

Hé bien voilÃ* autre chose Ã* présent! N'importe quoi! If we let things going this way, handicap genuine vs continuation apart, we'll end up with large stickers at rear! Like "I hate Capri drivers" or "Escorts are for cow boys!" together with "Gonzo at wheel" and "Chevrons suck"… May be we should think about letting all the bills displayed on the dash board!

Probably seriously late to the party, but I’ve recently watched 3 ‘Wheeler Dealers’ episodes from when they were in the USA. No idea how old they are, but the Corvair resto was nice. Edd China knows his stuff, but of course their labour isn't added into the costs, so the total is a bit false!

Weekend at Donington

Decent weekend at Donington for MSVRs Club Championships at Donington.
Some decent racing especially in Heritage FF, Monoposto and GT Cup.

It was great to see R Chamberlains Porsche 935 which has around 600 HP beating 2 British GT3 M6 GT3.Shame that Bob Berridge didn't show in his V8 Volvo.

Overall a great day at Donington and was as good watching a Pro Driver in the Lamborghini catch Dan Gibsons 650s GT3 by 2 seconds a lap to win by 15 seconds after being 15 seconds behind after the pitstops with 22 minutes to go.
Probably going to do a report on that one.

Not bad although could have done with some warmer weather.

Its a series we get over here and is played a few times a week. I must admit I quite like the show. They did another based in America series with 'new' mechanic Ant Anstead who is also very good. That series included a V6 Capri (Mercury in the US,) and a fave of mine was the Volvo 850 T5R Turbo wagon.

Back in the Edd China days they did a Morgan one, (an MOT failure) which needed a new chassis and was full body off.
Found highlights of the Morgan show on youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y52BbZE82wI

Edit: Found the full Morgan episode. 50 minutes.
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5prt2l

Volvo T5R

(The sound was a bit slow for me but understandable)
The end scene is a bit contrived but....

Thanks E.B, great, really! Think they had a body off with a TVR too. What is noticeable from the english seasons is that they started with "let's buy a wreck and hide the misery with some polish and make a huge profit" something we call maquillage-make up and moved to real restorations involving a lot of mechanical interventions and skilled artisans too.
That's why many of us France were so much amazed. When you're leaving in a desert starving for infos or skills its strange to see a healthy neighbor…
