Toyota Back To The WRC

Exactly as the thread title says, Toyota have confirmed they will return to the WRC in 2017...

http://m.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/117506

...great bit of news. I hope they are joined by another Japanese marque or two!

Yep, good news although putting the Yaris next to the old Corolla WRC for some of the pictures was a mistake - the Corolla looks much better! Hopefully the existing manufacturers will stick around so we get a proper fight.

The older I get, the smaller the WRC cars get. I predict that in my life time, the WRC cars will reduce down to the size of a matchbox!

They used to be escorts and chevettes, they just got bigger in the 90s, but that was proven to be a mistake by how much better these little cars are to watch.

But I will agree, this car looks terrible. Hopefully a new model will come out before they race. Or maybe they will just improve it. The Yaris looks like a standard car on small wheels at normal rise height with a wide body kit on it.

A mistake!!! Ceica, IMpreza, Escort, Lancer, Octavia, 206, Cordoba, Accent, massive entries, the biggest the sport has been for decadesa nd you think a Polo, DS3 and Fiesta are better!

Sorry chap but unless you saw them live, you aere in a dream world son. The drivers are just as committed, but the cars are easier to drive, sound crap and look awful!

Agreed, the Yaris certainly isn't a looker! (at least not at the moment).

Still, Hyundai managed to make the boxy i20 look OK so hopefully Toyota can do the same with the Yaris. The Fiesta and Polo are still the best looking cars of the current generation for me.

I have never found the current 1.6 litre WRC cars sounding 'crap'. Grop N Mitsubishi's may sound dull because they rarely rev more than 5k, but 1.6 WRC cars use higher rpm.

IMO the best sounding rally cars I've seen in real life are Lancia Stratos and MG Metro. But compared to those N/A V6's I still don't find 1.6 WRC cars sounding 'crap'.

My main problem with small cars today is that they dont really have a bonnet and if they do its incredibly sloped. A bonnet for me should be almost horizontal.

Yes that's a pity that true saloon car racing has disappeared. Modern cars you could call saloon cars are just too wide and too heavy for racing on 10 feet wide country roads.

Agree!! Too many rally fans think these current cars are great. They are fast, no doubt about it, and the drivers are committed but I'm not convinced they're 'jaw dropping'. And they don't sound great, even if they sound better than the 2.0T previous WRCars.

Part of selling the sport, is having great looking, great sounding cars, with bangs, flames, etc Call it all part of the 'WRC Show'.

Look how popular the 3 Porsche 911 GT3's were last weekend? And they had no hope of winning.

The Porsches sounded fab! The TV production personnel will do well to watch and listen to some of the stage clips fans produce and upload online, they make the action look quite spectacular; something the TV pictures do not often convey except for the overheard shots of the cars and landscape. The fan edited footage **** on the 'here's a two second clip of the car crossing the finishing line and now here's another interview for the nth time'. It just eats into time we could have watching the cars.

That turned into a bit of a rant there. Maybe, I should contact the producers.
