NOT another new championship!!!
Taken from the BRSCC Website:
"The British Racing & Sports Car Club (BRSCC) has announced draft plans for a new saloon car championship for the 2004 season, that will develop the current AutoItalia Championship. ‘The BRSCC Le Mans Motorsport Euro Championship’ will debut next spring and will build on the success of the long running AutoItalia series that pitched Italian marque against Italian marque. This time the boundaries have been increased to encompass all saloons and coupes produced by European manufacturers. Exact plans are yet to be finalised but it is envisaged that the Championship will consist of five classes allowing for both production and modified cars. There is also the potential of having a ‘catch all’ guest class that would allow European manufactured cars of US or Japanese origin to also compete. Other ideas under consideration are the possibility of rolling starts, no restriction on tyres and measures to equalise performance. Stuart Cumming, Managing Director of the Le Mans Motorsport Group, has already pledged his support to the new initiative "Our company enjoyed rapid growth on the back of the AutoItalia Championship. The expansion of the Championship to encompass all European marques is a natural progression and we are delighted to back the new championship" commented Stuart. Tony Soper, of AutoItalia and a regular Alfa Romeo Championship campaigner is also enthusiastic about the new project adding "The new proposals will allow potential competitors whose cars aren’t currently eligible for a championship to get their cars back on the track. I would expect to see very healthy grids and some serious inter-marque rivalry developing." BRSCC Competition Secretary, John Ward, sees the BRSCC Le Mans Motorsport Euro Championship as a sign of things to come "As with the rest of motorsport we are in a process of rationalisation and anything that gets more drivers racing and puts more cars on the grid has to be good news for the Club, competitors, circuits and fans". More details will be announced as and when they are confirmed" Is this going to replace the AutoItalia or be another new championship? |

Sounds to me like its just a continuation of the AutoItalia but with more classes.

So in endurance racing in the UK we now have British GT's, BritCar(EERC) and now this!! looks like the BRSCC are trying to get on the Enduro bandwaggon
Eddited to add. Having re-read it, ot looks like the BRSCC are trying to beat BritCar at their own game. But has any real info been released about this "new and improved" series yet? Last edited by jase; 10 Oct 2003 at 12:02. |

As I see it the BRSCC and Auto Italia are merely trying to open up their regulations to encourage more competitors and therefore create larger grids. If so, then I think they are to be congratulated. As for FBMW that is something completely different and an open wheel series not saloon cars.

Larger grids for this new championship might mean smaller grids elsewhere. I thought the MSA were trying to reduce the number of championships.
Oh dont forget the Supercar V8 thing that is also starting up next year Not heard of any major championships being abolished or merged with others so as to provide full grids and close racing. |

jasongore - It's not an endurance series and it is the modification of an existing series.
If you look through the BRSCC's championship lists you'll notice a significant number of european based series/championships, some of which are struggling for numbers. I suspect the BRSCC are just going to massage the regs to allows these to be incorporated. Jolly sensible idea and should be supported. |

I think it's a good idea. AutoItalia grids have been thin this year. Anything that improves it for both the competitors and the paying public is a good thing.

Well at least it won't be another failure. BRSCC are not running it.
